The Nurse Extern role is designed to provide expanded clinical experience for senior professional (RN) nursing students and to assist the Registered Nursing staff by performing patient care activities, which includes participating in patient care planning, implementation, observation, and evaluation, as well as reporting significant observations to a Registered Nurse.

Nurse Extern Program
The Nurse Extern Program at Brookwood Baptist Health provides the opportunity for a smooth transition from student nurse to registered nurse. Benefits for the Student Nurse Include

The Nurse Extern Program consists of two phases that foster professional development.
Nurse Extern I
The Nurse Extern I schedule strikes a balance with the unit’s requirements and the student’s school commitments, providing the duties of a patient care tech. If hired into the Float pool, the nurse extern will experience multiple units. Nurse externs have the ability to crosstrain as a monitor tech, constant observer (CPI class required), or unit secretary.
Nurse Extern I Requirements:
• Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Nursing course (usually first semester) of an accredited school of nursing. Student must pass all courses to remain in the
program. (Applicants can apply starting three weeks before completion of the Fundamentals of Nursing course.)
• Follow unit-specific minimum work commitment in each schedule
Nurse Extern II
The Nurse Extern II will be assigned to an experienced RN each shift and will assist with providing care similar to a patient care tech. Skills learned include planning, prioritizing
and implementing patient care, medication management, assessment and reassessment, equipment and technology, SBAR and handoff techniques.
Rotation Details
The Nurse Extern II will rotate to various units such as the emergency department, intensive care units (CVICU, MICU, SICU), med-surg/tele areas, women’s services or specialty
rotations (surgical services, cath lab and Center for Psychiatry).
Nurse Extern II Requirements:
• Successfully entered their senior year at an accredited school of nursing and must pass all senior courses to remain in program. (Applicants can apply starting six weeks
before their senior year begins.)
• A letter of recommendation from the nursing faculty is required with the application.
• Interview and receive a position commitment from the Extern Program and unit leader.
