The Student Statistician will leverage technical knowledge of research and statistical methods and understanding of health insurance business to develop clinical models and other quantitative methods. The Student Statistician will work closely with clinical informatics staff to ensure clinical models and other quantitative methods meet expectations of our internal and external users.
The Student Statistician will focus on developing analytic solutions for models of value-based reimbursement. This will include development of measures, scoring methodologies, risk adjustments, and visualization of data. Experience with healthcare analytics and analysis of claims data would be a plus but is not required.
The Student Statistician will be a temporary employee, working 40 hours per week for 12 weeks during the summer of 2026. The starting and ending dates are somewhat flexible to allow for candidates on different academic schedules.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the expert for clinical model development and other quantitative methods with accountability for defining the scope of work, establishing the methodology and developing the solution for product development. Including:
- conceptualizing analytic solutions
- extract and transform data from warehouses as needed,
- writing and maintaining source code,
- quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis,
- conduct quality assurance tests on source code,
- and prepare documentation and communication of analytic solutions to other business units
- Develop and ensure that appropriate research and analytic strategies are in place to support clinical model development and other quantitative methods.
- Effectively communicates analytic results, outcomes and research concepts to other business units.
- Collaborate with clinical informatics leadership on the assessment, prioritization, design and development of clinical models and other quantitative methods.

- Managing the development of clinical models and other quantitative methods from inception to completion
- Demonstrated ability to partner with other business units to deliver analytic solutions that align with business requirements
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate analytic results and research concepts to non-technical audiences
- Experience working with large, complex data sets from multiple sources. Including cleaning, transforming, merging and/or managing data.
- Understanding of relational database systems.
- Strong programming skills (SQL and R preferred)
- Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
- Enrolled in biostatistics, mathematics, statistics, or other relevant field of study at any of the following levels:
- Undergraduate between Junior and Senior years
- Between undergraduate and Master’s Degree
- Between the first and second years of a Master’s Degree program
- Statistical programming skills in SAS, R, SPSS, or STATA.
- Experience with complex statistical modeling projects (such as regression, machine learning, and decision trees).
- Experience in the health insurance industry is a plus but is not required
- Experience with health insurance claims data is a plus but is not required

Compensation and Benefit Information
Compensation
- Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour. Compensation depends on location, qualifications, and experience.
- Position may be eligible for a signing bonus for qualified new hires, subject to employment status
