Description:

A Cardiology Fellow participates in an organized three year post graduate educational program that trains the physician in cardiovascular medicine. He has daily contact with patients and assumes increasing responsibility for their care under the supervision of the attending staff of the hospital. The assumption of responsibility is the most important aspect of the fellows training. As each fellow physician demonstrates increasing knowledge and ability in cardiovascular medicine, an increasing amount of reliance should be placed in his judgment in the diagnosis and in treatment of patients. The physician is given the opportunity to put into practice the principles of preventive medicine, diagnoses, therapy and patient management which he learned as a resident. Under the supervision of the attending staff, he is given progressively increasing responsibility so that he acquires confidence in his clinical judgment. For the training to be approved, the hospital where the residency is served must be approved by the Board of Directors of Palmetto General Hospital, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and/or the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).




Qualifications:

Position Qualification:(Training, Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities)
1. Must be a graduate of an osteopathic or allopathic post-graduate clinical eduction approved medical school or in good academic standing with an anticipated graduation date prior to commencing program at facility.
2. Must have passed the Level 1, 2 and 3 of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) or the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
3. Have completed an AOA approved internal medicine residency program or an ACGME approved internal medicine program from which AOA approval has been granted.
4. Be and remain a member of the AOA and ACOI during fellowship.
5. Must have registered with the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine as an *Physician-in-Training*, or as a licensed physician in the state of Florida.
During training all fellows must:
a. Submit a fellow annual report to the ACOI by July 31 of each calendar year. Final reports of fellows who complete the program in months other than June must be submitted within (30) thirty days of completion of the training year.
b. Attend a minimum of 70% of all educational meetings as directed by the program director. Fellows must also participate in appropriate professional staff activities, hospital committee meetings and they must participate in institutional resident/student education.
c. Participate in a research component which is to be submitted to the ACOI prior to or upon completion of the training.
d. Maintain a procedures log of all required procedures with a copy to be kept in the Department of Medical Education.
f. Maintain a current e-mail address and provide to the ACOI
g. Function in an ethical and professional manner.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
1. Current BLS and ACLS certification required
2. Must have registered with the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine or Florida Board of Medicine as a *Physican-in-Training* or have a ACTIVE/CLEAR license status as an Osteopathic Physician or Medical Doctor.
