Position Summary:

This position will register patients, verify insurance, and collect pertinent patient information and data. Information is obtained from patients or family member visiting the OB ED. She/he provides information by answering admitting procedure, hospital regulation and service inquires of the patients.

When there aren’t patients to admit, the admitting clerk will answer phone calls and emails, perform data entry charges, put paper charts together.

The unit secretary / admitting clerk works on the front line of the Labor and Delivery and OB ED. She/he greets patients and their family, gathers their personal information, and tells the medical staff about the patient and severity of their condition.

Required Training/Education/Experience/Certification:

  • Current BLS Certification
  • Must have working knowledge of basic medical terminology and be computer literate.
  • Must be able to decipher physician orders and complete requisitions. Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment.
  • Analytical and grammatical skills are necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.
  • Candidates must have excellent customer service skills; be friendly, organized, and knowledgeable about the health care procedure.
  • Computer skills-need to process insurance information and medical records, use the phone system, and learn hospital specific software.
  • Communication skills – listening to customers and hospital staff, speaking in a clear and friendly way over the phone and face to face are essential
  • Organized – need to stay organized for each patient that is admitted and create a paper trail that needs to be in order.
    Must be a team player and provide a friendly face to the public.
