JOB SUMMARY
Performs routine technical and clerical functions to include specimen registration and billing. Performs specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens. Performs phlebotomy duties as assigned. Will perform CLIA waived laboratory tests, as requested. Will assist in microbiology processing and plating specimens, as requested.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
- Records phlebotomy collection times on tubes and in the computer accurately.
- Identifies the patient - comparing patient information on the label to the patient’s identification band before venipuncture is performed.
- Displays courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Labels all test tubes according to procedure, logs procedures, files paperwork.
- Is knowledgeable about which type of tube to use and the volume of blood needed - knows test requirements.
- Follows Standard Precautions at all times.
- Disposes all sharps in a rigid sharps container.
- Cleans and supplies venipuncture trays. Maintains work areas. Orders supplies when needed.
- Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties.
- Completes duties in a timely and efficient manner, knows how to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders and outpatients.
- Seeks guidance and direction as necessary.
- Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
- Assists Medical Lab Scientists, does clerical work when needed. Assists with point-of-care testing maintenance when needed.
- Follows policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory and the hospital.
- Attention to detail to verify relevant data and process specimens ensuring appropriate specimens are handled, packaged and shipped to the designated laboratory according to established protocols and specimen integrity.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
- Adheres to scheduling requests of the department (Works weekends, no “special days off”, no exceptions, unless in school).
- Adheres to the Customer Service Standards of Texas Regional Medical Center while representing the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department and complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Utilizes computerized punch time system correctly.
- Completes annual education requirements and maintains regulatory requirements.
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean and wears identification while on duty.
- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion and has not missed any mandatory in-services.
- Attends at least 8 staff meetings annually, is responsible for information presented at monthly staff meetings that he/she is unable to attend.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of phlebotomy training program required
- 1 year of laboratory experience required
- Basic laboratory computer/lab information system experience preferred
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Additional languages preferred.
SKILLS
- Basic computer knowledge required.
- Understands the pre-analytical variables that affect laboratory specimens.
- Correct application of laboratory medical terminology and measurements.
- Organizational, planning, and prioritization skills to handle multiple tasks and accomplish work accurately and timely.
- Demonstrates problem solving by taking the appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.
- Capable of handling multiple priorities in a high volume setting.
- Service orientation actively looking for ways to care through respect, courtesy, empathy and warmth when communicating with patients and clients.
- Operate basic laboratory equipment, computers and medical software.
- Aware of response to others by using feedback, listening skills, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- Team-work skills contributing to departmental success.
- Accurate data entry into medical software.
- Attention to detail to verify relevant data and process specimens ensuring appropriate specimens are handled, packaged and shipped to the designated laboratory according to established protocols and specimen integrity.
