Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Sunnyvale is seeking a Sterile Processing Tech to sterilize and assemble all of the instruments required for surgery, exams and other medical procedures by adhering to the Association of Preoperative Nurses (AORN) and the American Association for Advancement of Medical Instruments (AAAMI) standards.

What your day will look like:

  • Prepares and assembles surgical trays & equipment following established tray listings for issue, storage or further processing (such as sterilization).
  • Inspects instruments for cleanliness, proper functioning and damage by viewing the instruments before assembly. Cleans all items according to manufactures guidelines.
  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of sterilization processes and tasks performed by the SPD technician
  • Monitors, reads, documents and interprets all parameters for all types of sterilizers to ensure proper function (ETO, Steam, Steris and Sterrad).
  • Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed.
  • Sorts and arranges items into correct trays and wraps trays and individual items in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
  • Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers in accordance with approved policies and procedures. Checks indicators for proper functioning.
  • Maintains availability of supplies for recording continuity during the sterilization process.
  • Cleans sterilizers in accordance with approved policies and procedures. Maintains a clean and orderly central sterilizing area.
  • Performs weekly inspections of all sterile items and checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area. Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventor list.
  • Maintains current information regarding routine preference cards in the count sheet.
  • Parameters for all types of sterilizers are monitored, read, documented and interpreted to ensure proper functioning.
  • Appropriate cleaning detergents and agents are utilized through following manufacturer directions and referring to the MSDS sheets.
  • Universal Precautions are followed through wearing the appropriate protective attire while working in the decontamination and sterilization areas.
  • Instruments are decontaminated, disassembled, cleaned and routed to appropriate holding areas while keeping a continuous flow of equipment moving throughout the process.
  • Communications are maintained with all team members to be sure all pertinent information is shared in a timely manner pertaining to the department.
  • Instrument repair or replacement of individual sets is tracked and quantified in an organized and timely fashion.
  • Immediate use sterilization is limited and tracked appropriately per manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Demonstrates use of correct surgical attire. Dresses appropriately for working in the OR environment.

Success Factors:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a formal Sterile Processing Technician course with field training or 1 year of experience as Sterile Processing Technician or Operating Technician.
  • Preferred: 1 year as sterile processing technician with completion of formal sterile processing technician course.
  • Must be certified with IAHCSMM or CBSPD within 1 year.
  • Preferred: Current certification through internationally recognized organizations such as IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management) or Certification Board for Central Sterile Processing (CBSPD).
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
