Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides occupational therapy under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, including contributions toward assessment, plan of care and implementation, documentation and communication.  The COTA possesses basic to advanced technical and organizational patient care skills.  In addition, the COTA has skills in evaluation patient responses and uses past experiences and evidence-based practices in providing care and decision-making.  There is a focus on outcomes, and care is delivered using a systematic approach.  Consults with other members of the healthcare team when necessary.  Maintains acceptable standards  of patient care within the clinical area.
POSITION DUTIES:

Provide individualized treatment for patient level of care and length of stay that relate to established goals under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.
Contribute to evaluation process as directed by the primary therapist. Follow established treatment plan.
Effectively involve and educate patient and caregivers in the plan of care. 
Document treatments and progress towards goals that relate to clinical findings.
Provide treatments such as relates to:  Upper Extremity Management:  Sensation, Strength/Tone, Range of Motion, Coordination, Edema Control, Desensitization, Psychological Components, Activities of Daily Living, Cognition, Visual Perception, Vocational/Avocational, Patient/Family Education, Functional Mobility, and Body Systems (i.e. musculoskeletal, nervous, integumentary, and cardiovascular).

Provide therapy modalities such as:  Iontophoresis, Ultrasound, Fluidotherapy, Contrast Bath, Paraffin, Ice Massage, TENS, Hot/Cold Packs, Electrical Stimulation, and Compression.
Demonstrate and instruct patient/caregiver on body mechanics
Identify contraindications for patient. Follow precautions for WB, Cardiac, and Contact, Spinal precautions,, and precautions with total joint replacements.
Demonstrate knowledge of inpatient lab values, diagnostic tests, medications, FIM scale / PAI scoring and the impact on the patient.

Maintain skills required to use and care for equipment such as: Pulse Oximeter, Blood Pressure Cuff / Pulse, Exercise Equipment, Sliding boards, crutches, canes, walkers, Wheelchairs (including CADILLAC) Patient Beds (Versacare, Total Care, SizeWise) (IP only), Tilt Table,  Floor Lift , Lite Gait , and Standing Frame.
Provide clinical support  for staff  throughout  the  Network related to  area of practice.
Counsel patient and family regarding treatments, modalities, and home programs
Activley participate in interdisciplinary team processes, including collaboration with physicians, vendors, other disciplines, inclusive of discharge planning.
Document collaboration / discussion with supervising therapist re: change of status in patient’s condition or physician orders.
Maintain a practice that is consistent with established guidelines and standards.
Level 2 – Proficient (in addition to above duties)
Serve  as  a  preceptor/mentor  for  students and staff, as appropriate.
Participate in department goal setting. Participate in brainstorming activities. Provide feedback on procedures.
Act as a resource to promote occupational therapy within Carondelet.
Participate in hospital safety and emergent programs.
Individualize care and foster therapeutic relationships.
Level 3 – Subject Matter Expert (in addition to above duties)
Participate in performance improvement teams, activities, quality improvement measures within the department.
Serves as a lead for the team.
Participates in special project(s) as assigned.
Provides supervision / direction to volunteers within the dept.
Performs pre-operative education activities



Qualifications:
Education
Required: Graduate of an (AOTA) accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant Education Program
Licensure
Required: Valid, current license, AZ State Board of OT Examiners
Certificates
Required: Valid, current OTA certification, CPR-BLS
Experience
Preferred:  Prior patient exposure in area of practice
Skills
Required:  Verbal and written communication skills
Preferred: Neonatal and Pediatric competence
Knowledge
Required: Competent in the delivery of Occupational Therapy 
                  Treatments under the direction of an Occupational 
                  Therapist.
Technology
Required: Basic computer skills
Preferred: Microsoft Office Programs
Other
Required:  Must be able to work flexible hours, holidays and/or weekends.   Must be able to transport self to various worksites.  When using own vehicle must have valid Arizona drivers’ license and proof of insurance that meets the minimum standards for the state of Arizona.
