Position Summary:

The Exercise Physiologist plans, delivers and evaluates patient care to designated participants in the Cardiopulmonary Rehab program under the direction and supervision of the Clinical Manager and/or Director. The Exercise Physiologist works with team members to improve customer satisfaction and maximize results within the department and functions as a team leader and facilitator providing communications with other health team members in the Cardiopulmonary Rehab department, as well as, performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

1.     Reports for scheduled shift on time and prepared to assume responsibilities.

•    Reports to work in proper uniform or attire.
•    Leaves for meal break on time and returns on time. 
•    Varies work schedule to meet the needs of the department.
•    Ensures all overtime had been approved by the department head prior to working.
•    Schedules all time off with supervisor approval. 
•    Strictly adheres to hospital attendance/tardiness policies 100% of the time. 
•    Wears I.D. badge in visible location at all times on hospital property.

 

2. Attends and participates in meetings and is responsible for information communicated at meetings.

•    Attends all hospital mandatory in-services on a timely basis as scheduled. 
•    Participates as an active team member at staff meetings.
•    Reads communications and acts upon in a positive and informative manner. 
•    Is an active participant in assigned PIG (Performance Improvement Group) meetings.

3. Adheres to Corporate, Regional, hospital and departmental policy and procedure 100% of the time.

•    Reads and comprehends the company's Standards of Conduct. During the past evaluation period, has demonstrated compliance with the company's Ethics program. 
•    Understands that compliance with Corporate Integrity Program is a condition of employment and violation of any principals or practices if the program will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. 
•    Maintains confidentiality regarding patient/employee/facility/corporate information 100% of the time.

4. Assists all patients, family members, physicians, visitors and employees in a professional and 
   courteous manner.

•    Extends special attention and sensitivity to all patients, visitors, physicians and fellow employees. 
•    Assists in maintaining an atmosphere of cooperation with other departments and allied professionals. 
•    Demonstrates respect and cooperation in all staff relationships, and a genuine willingness to prevent or resolve interpersonal conflicts. 
•    Demonstrates the ability to participate in and/or implement team decisions. 
•    Actively participates in and encourages actions that promote good public relations with patients’ families, visitors and the community.  Focus should always be on ensuring patient satisfaction to reach PSMS goals.
•    Works together in a spirit of teamwork. 
•    Shares information on a “need to know” basis.

5. Follows Infection Control procedures at all times.

    Clinical Personnel
    
•    Strictly adheres to Standard Precautions by adhering to the usage of personal protective equipment when handling blood or body fluids. 
•    Washes hands and other skin surfaces with soap and water thoroughly and immediately if contaminated with blood or other body fluids and before and after patient contact. 
•    Dispose of sharps in puncture resistant needle boxes. 
•    All healthcare workers who participate in invasive procedures must routinely use appropriate barrier precautions. Wear gloves, goggles, and surgical masks for all invasive procedures. 
•    All specimens of blood and body fluids should be put in a well-constructed container with a secure lid to prevent leaking during transport. Specimen containers should be placed in biohazardous coded plastic bag for transportation. 
•    Adheres to isolation procedures and techniques at all times as applicable.

6. Adheres to the following environmental care standards.

•    Demonstrates adequate knowledge of Safety Policies and Procedures, the use of MSDS sheets, Hazardous Material procedures, and Safety Codes.

•    Demonstrates adequate knowledge of Security issues, i.e., personal protection, protection of personnel and hospital property.


7. Demonstrates the ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations.

Clinical:
        Adolescents (13 to 17 years):
•    Modifies the interview techniques, identifies psychosocial, physical and educational needs common to the adolescent patient.
•    Recognizes patients' needs to assert independence and reluctance to express dependency needs and anxiety about hospitalization.

    Adult (18 to 65 years):
•    Modifies the interview techniques, identifies psychosocial, physical and educational needs common to the adult patient.
•    Recognizes patients' needs to assert independence and reluctance to express dependency needs and anxiety about hospitalization.

   Geriatric (65 years and older):
•    Identifies increased physician/emotional dependency needs and availability of support networks.
•    Identifies increased sensitivity to climate changes.
•    Assesses potential for increased educational needs due to compromised abilities to comply with instructions.  Explains in easily understood terms all aspects with regard to releases/consent.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Minimum:    Bachelor’s Degree of Exercise Science     and Health& Motion
Preferred:    Master’s degree in Exercise Science    

EXPERIENCE:        
1-2 years in Adult Exercise Physiology or strong Cardiopulmonary Internship.


REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:
- American Heart Association BLS Certification
- ACLS within 6 months of hire
- ACSM Exercise Test Technologist, ACSM Clinical Exercise Specialist or American Association of Cardiovascular and - Pulmonary Rehabilitation Certification (AACVPR)  within one year of hire.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- Basic Computer Skills
- ECG monitoring
