Position Summary:
An Ophthalmic Surgery Technician (or Ophthalmic Surgical Assistant) provides specialized clinical and surgical support to ophthalmologists during eye procedures. This role bridges the gap between routine diagnostic testing and high-stakes operating room assistance.
ResponsibilitiesSurgical Assistance: Assists surgeons during procedures like cataract removal or LASIK. Tasks include prepping and draping patients, passing surgical instruments, and maintaining a sterile field.
Diagnostic Testing: Performs specialized measurements such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), visual field testing, and A/B ultrasonography to determine surgical plans.
Patient Care: Conducts pre-operative assessments, administers eye medications (drops), and provides post-operative instructions to patients and families.
Equipment Management: Sterilizes and maintains delicate surgical instruments. They also calibrate and troubleshoot diagnostic equipment like autorefractors and Humphrey field analyzers.
Clinical Support: Documents patient medical histories, records vital signs, and manages patient flow within the clinic or surgical center
Technical Proficiency: Mastery of ophthalmic anatomy, sterile techniques, and medical software (EHR/EMR).
Dexterity & Detail: High level of manual dexterity for handling minute surgical tools and extreme attention to detail for accurate eye measurements.
Interpersonal Skills: Empathy and clear communication are essential for comforting anxious patients before surgery.
EDUCATION:
- Post high school, vocational/specialized training.
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous Eye experience preferred.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:
- Graduate of approved program.
- Certification preferred
- BLS Certification
