Summary
The Medical Technologist II Generalist performs routine and complex laboratory analyses and procedures on blood, body fluids and exudates from patients following established protocols and procedures. Clinical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease. As the Medical Technologist acquires expertise in the performance of test procedures, he/she will also accept responsibility and accountability of being in charge in the absence of the supervisor.
The MT II must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to interact with various ages of clients served in the course and scope of his/her job duties. These age populations may include pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. This position may require direct patient care. However, in the course and scope of the regular job duties, this individual may be required to interface with patients, family members and the public at-large. Assessment of the skills necessary to communicate with various age populations is addressed on the corresponding competency assessment.
The Medical Technologist must have an understanding of the principles and procedures utilized in the clinical laboratory and be able to:
Follow policies involving specimen collection and preparation
- Perform testing of the following complexities
- Simple o Moderate

- Maintain laboratory equipment
- Have working knowledge of principles and functions of instruments
- Perform preventative maintenance
- Daily
- Weekly
- Monthly
- Troubleshoot instruments
- Perform calibration on instruments
- Initiate calls for technical assistance or service as needed
- Documents refrigerators, freezers, and incubators temperature as required
- Participate in Quality Control programs
- Run QC daily
- Record QC
- Evaluate QC
- Take corrective action
- Record refrigerators, freezers, and incubators temperature as required
- Follow Process Improvement
- Produce quality work
- Notify responsible caregiver of critical values with documentation on the report (RBV).
- Report laboratory results in a timely and accurate manner
- Recognize problems and take appropriate action
- Teach and Mentor (as assigned)

- Maintain inventory control o Assist in ordering and stocking supplies
- Perform lot-to-lot and new shipment correlation studies
- Demonstrate Professionalism
- Comply with Tenets’ Standards of Conduct

- Observe hospital policies and rules governing conduct, outcome measures, patient care standards o Maintain professional appearance and wear ID badge
- Communicate and improve of processes:
- Use shift- to-shift communication logs
- Participate in vertical and horizontal flow of information
- Follow chain of command
- Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy
- Assist Pathologist in the Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy
- Has a current CPR certification
- Communicate and improve of processes:
- Demonstrate competence in all areas of the sections (as documented on the orientation check- list), and work assigned benches as needed and seek appropriate consultation when necessary.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
- Required: Bachelor’s degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical technology, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489 or have qualified at the Medical Technologist level by achieving a satisfactory grade on an HHS examination before 2/28/92 42 CFR 493.1491.
- The above meets the required criteria as defined by CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing (42 CFR 493.1489 and 42 CFR 493.1491).
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Required: Registered with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT or CSMLS within 12 months of hire).
- Equivalency evaluation by ECE, NACES or AICE for non-US trained personnel must be completed within 30 days of hire.
- Licensure, as required by State.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Ability to speak, read, and write fluent English
- Ability to learn and integrate technical aspects of the laboratory as a whole
- Ability to make quick and accurate decisions under stress and emergency situations
- Ability to use computers (i.e. Microsoft Office, LIS systems)
Experience Required
- Required: 2 years as a medical technologist in acute facility, or 1 year as a medical technologist in acute facility and a master’s degree.
