Summary

The Hospitals of Providence Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead are expected to lead according to five leadership attributes: Service, Quality, Cost, People, and Growth.

Service:
Department lead is accountable for employee adherence to hospital goals of patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction, and employee satisfaction as well as positive employee interaction with other hospital staff. Manage, promote positive and equitable working environment where all employees share in work requirements. Each individual is treated with respect, as an integral part of the work environment. Meeting turnaround time requirements and maintaining testing accuracy are measured goals of the department lead responsibility. Courtesy when dealing with patients, hospital staff and physicians as well as The Joint Commission and CAP patient safety goals are service expectations monitored for adherence by the department lead.

Quality:
Quality of laboratory systems is managed by the department lead under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services. Regulatory requirements of The Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists, Federal Drug Administration, AABB, and CLIA are referenced and adhered to. The department lead is responsible for maintaining quality standards and educates all lab department employees and hospital staff that interact with the department as to requirements of laboratory testing. The department lead is accountable for maintaining instrument calibration, method validation function and SOP’s as per regulatory guidelines. Monitoring quality control of test systems, performance improvement activities, and quality assurance are also maintained. Safety in job performance, fulfilling infection control precautions, MSDS compliance, use of PPE and all aspects of lab safety are the responsibility of the department supervisor to manage.

Cost:
Inventory of reagents, supplies and instrument service contracts are department lead responsibilities to manage. The lead has knowledge of manufacturer costs and utilizes the products efficiently. The department lead is responsible for efficient processes so that waste is kept to a minimum and large inventories are not maintained. The lead utilizes an inventory control system to track receipt and lot numbers of reagents and supplies. Basic knowledge of capital equipment requests and budgets is required for department management.

People:
Staffing responsibilities of the department lead include scheduling based on volume statistics and departmental budget. Staffing across departments and shifts requires interaction between supervisors, and department leads. The department lead is responsible to staff their department within Laboratory budget guidelines. All employees are treated with respect and courtesy paying attention to personal needs when possible. Staff competencies and evaluations are performed in a professional manner with discussion on an individual basis.

Growth:
An opportunity for growth potential is often first noticed by the department lead. The knowledge to recognize these opportunities and how they can be incorporated into the lab department and hospital as a whole is a valued attribute of this leader. The department lead is responsible to evaluate growth in their department by reviewing send out tests for the opportunity of bringing the test in house. New tests are evaluated by the lead for turnaround time, volume and impact of bringing the test in house.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

 Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field, or equivalent with 10 year experience

 Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or related field, or equivalent

Required Licenses/Certifications

 MT (ASCP)/equivalent registry (i.e. NCA, CLS) acceptable or eligible
 MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registry with 10 years experience
 Must meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA ‘88) requirement for testing personnel in a high complexity testing laboratory
 Hospital policy requires that anyone who operates a vehicle must have a driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

 Ability to handle multiple priorities and tasks effectively and efficiently
 Ability to speak, read, and write fluent English
 Ability to learn and integrate technical aspects of the laboratory
