Abrazo Community Health Network serves the Phoenix metro area with a comprehensive system of care, including 5 acute care hospitals, emergency centers, urgent care sites, and physician offices. The network offers a wide range of services such as cardiology, orthopedics, women’s health, surgery, and imaging, with a strong emphasis on personalized, high-quality care.

Abrazo Arrowhead Campus (229 beds) is a key facility, featuring advanced programs in cardiovascular care, stroke and neurosurgery, women’s health (including a Level III NICU), and robotic surgery. The network also operates freestanding emergency centers and a “micro hospital,” along with one of Arizona’s largest urgent care networks (NextCare).

Abrazo facilities are widely recognized for quality and outcomes, with accreditations and awards from organizations such as The Joint Commission, American Heart Association, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna, particularly in cardiac, stroke, and orthopedic care.

Position Summary

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) serves as the senior nursing executive, responsible for the strategic direction, quality, and operational performance of all nursing and designated patient care services.

This role provides 24/7 leadership accountability for:

  • Clinical quality and patient safety
  • Nursing workforce performance and engagement
  • Regulatory compliance and evidence-based practice
  • Resource and financial management

The CNO partners with executive leadership, the medical staff, and the governing board to advance organizational strategy and ensure high-quality patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

People & Culture

  • Lead nurse recruitment, retention, and succession planning
  • Foster a culture of safety, engagement, and professional development
  • Support workforce planning, competency development, and education programs
  • Promote a respectful, inclusive, and high-performing work environment

Clinical & Operational Leadership

  • Ensure delivery of safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
  • Oversee care delivery models, clinical systems, and practice standards
  • Drive continuous improvement in outcomes, safety, and patient experience

Quality, Safety & Performance

  • Lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
  • Monitor key metrics (clinical outcomes, infection rates, patient satisfaction)
  • Establish and sustain a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Mitigate clinical risk and ensure appropriate corrective actions

Strategic Leadership

  • Translate organizational strategy into nursing priorities and execution plans
  • Represent nursing at executive, board, and medical staff levels
  • Drive change management and organizational transformation
  • Align labor, productivity, and resource utilization with performance goals

Financial & Resource Management

  • Manage labor, operating, and capital budgets
  • Optimize staffing models based on acuity and patient needs
  • Ensure cost-effective utilization of resources while maintaining quality

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build strong partnerships with physicians and interdisciplinary leaders
  • Strengthen academic affiliations and nursing pipeline programs
  • Engage staff in shared governance and decision-making

Technology & Innovation

  • Support adoption and optimization of clinical technologies and EMR systems
  • Leverage data and analytics to improve care delivery and outcomes

Qualifications

Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience (ACNO, Director, or equivalent) in a complex hospital setting
  • Demonstrated success in clinical operations, quality improvement, and workforce leadership

Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Nursing or related field required
  • Active RN license required
  • CENP, NEA-BC, or similar certification preferred

  • Proven ability to lead change and improve outcomes
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Experience in recruitment, retention, and talent development
