General Responsibilities
The Blood Bank Supervisor is charged with the responsibility of implementing, reviewing and developing policies, procedures and practices on blood bank testing and blood and blood product utilization and management; acting as a technical resource for physicians and other department; training and maintaining a high level of competency among laboratory staff; evaluating and validating new methods, standards and equipment: compliance with federal, state regulatory and corporate regulations and by-laws; and maintaining an open communication with the Director of Laboratory Services and the Medical Director.
Specific Responsibilities
Responsible for the activities required to successfully operate the Blood Bank Sections of the Laboratory. This include, but are not be limited to, testing and reporting of results; instrumentation, methods and other analytical procedures; quality control and quality assurance; staff training; and regulatory compliance.
Responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the Blood Bank Section of the Laboratory and must be accessible to the Laboratory Staff to provide on-site, telephonic or electronic consultation.
Recommend to, and assist, the Director of Laboratory Services and the Medical Director in the selection and validation of instruments, procedures, methods changes and/or upgrades designed to keep the Blood Bank Section state-of-the-art.
Oversees the blood and blood product utilization policies and practices and to work closely with the Director of Laboratory Services, Medical Director, medical and nursing leadership, Quality Assurance, and other concerned hospital staff, ensuring patient safety, adequate turn-around time, quality of transfusion, reduction in blood and blood product wastage, and regulatory compliance.
All procedures, controls and maintenance functions must be available, up-to-date, and clearly in the prescribed NCCLS format. Logs of all maintenance and repair activities will be kept up-to-date.
Assist in the enrollment and participation in a proficiency testing program commensurate with the testing services offered, and in resolving any failed Proficiency Testing.
Responsible for meeting and exceeding the minimum requirements established by the College of American Pathologists for their quality survey program.
The Blood Bank Supervisor is required to have a working knowledge of the instrumentation and methods used within the Section. It is his/her responsibility to ensure that the instruments are functioning correctly and that there are reasonable and acceptable back up procedures for the times when instrumentation fails.
Responsible for maintaining an inventory by ordering supplies in a manner that will consistently provide adequate materials, minimize outdated items and result in cost effective inventory levels.
Responsible in providing the leadership whenever exceptions occur, during investigation of variances, in problem resolution, and documentation of remedial actions. This requires that the Supervisor maintain a competency level at which he/she is the resident expert.
The Supervisor will evaluate the needs and provide the necessary training to other CLS and ensure they meet their required competency in order to keep them informed and functioning at optimal competency.
The Blood Bank Supervisor is required to perform bench duties based on the needs of the Blood Bank and other lab sections.

1. Completed a baccalaureate degree in medical technology, laboratory science or related fields.
2.Completed an internship for Clinical Laboratory Science or Laboratory specialty.
3.Current and valid CLS license issued by the State of California Department of Health.
4.At least 5 years of training or experience or both in blood banking
5.Must complete a minimum of 12 continuing education units per year as required by license.
6.Must be able to perform bench work when needed,
7.Prior leadership and/or supervisory experience preferred,

Summary:
The Blood Bank Supervisor has the responsibility for the day-to-day operations, compliance, monitoring, and staff mentoring of the Blood Bank Section based on established best practice as well as evidence based blood management and transfusion practices for the Blood Bank Section of the Laboratory.
