Description:
JFK Memorial Hospital has provided medical care to residents in the Coachella Valley since 1966. A group of physicians, including Dr. Reynaldo Carreon, founded the hospital and today one of JFK’s cross streets is named in his honor.
Originally called Indio Community Hospital, JFK has grown to a 145-bed acute-care hospital that is part of Tenet Healthcare California. It offers a variety of services, including:

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for development, implementation, and maintenance of high quality breastfeeding education for parents and families as well as nursing and medical staff, prenatal/postnatal education, consultation and resource.
Shift: Days
Hours: 0700-1530
Schedule: Monday - Friday. Overnight shifts occasionally required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Caring and Clinical Performance
- Assesses each patient's biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, spiritual, cultural, self-care, educational and discharge planning based on age and developmental status.
- Utilizes the caring behaviors of empathy, active listening and cultural sensitivity and maintains patient dignity.
- A 20-30 minute visit to all breastfeeding mothers during hospitalization. Visit to include observation and assessment of mother-infant nursing and instruction and guidance on:
- Proper latch on
- Proper positioning
- Nipple and breast care
- Feeding schedules
- Follow up phone call postpartum to every discharged patient.
- Maintain charting, records, and statistics on patients counseled.
- Develop and present continuing education for nursing and other interested staff.
- Act as a resource to patients, families, nursing and medical staff, and ancillary departments.
- Prenatal/postnatal counseling available by appointment.
- Develop and conduct regular breastfeeding classes for the community.
- Continually update policies as needed.

- Maintains unit specific competencies, annual educational requirements.
- Increases clinical knowledge through formal nad informal educational programs. Some of which includes research findings.
- Attends/participates in unit meetings, in-services and committee meetings/task force.
Education
Minimum:
- Bachelors Degree in Nursing Required
- Maters in Healthcare Preferred
- Registered Nurse License
- Current certification through the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
- American Heart Association BLS certification
- American Academy of Pediatrics NRP certification
- Must be able to speak/understand the Spanish Language
Experience:
- Minimum of 1 years experience working as a Lactation Consultant in the healthcare setting preferred.
- 3-5 years of Maternal Child RN experience.
- Previous program development and implementation experience preferred.
- Must have advance knowledge of prenatal nursing practices, anatomy and physiology, pregnancy, labor, birth, lactation, infant care and clinical breastfeeding issues.
- Able to demonstrate exceptional communication, collaboration, teamwork and flexibility.
