Responsibilities
Registered nurse first assistant behaviors in the perioperative arena include but are not limited to preoperative patient management in collaboration with other health care providers, intraoperative performance of surgical first assistant techniques, postoperative patient management in collaboration with other health care providers in the immediate postoperative period and beyond. Functions intraoperatively as a first assistant at surgery only and not concurrently as a scrub person or circulator.
Qualifications
Education:
Required: Diploma or ADN required. Successful completion of an RNFA program that meets the AORN standards for RN first assistant education programs.
Preferred: BSN.
Experience:
Required: 1 year assisting experience.
Preferred: 3 years circulating experience.
Certifications:
Required: RN, BLS, and CNOR.
Preferred: CRNFA.

Position Summary
Provides circulating and/or scrub nurse services in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists the surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established procedures.
Primary Duties
- Performs pre-operative surgical nursing care management. Performs nursing physical assessments, educates the of the patient and offers emotional support and evaluates patient needs.
- Performs intra-operative nursing behaviors collaborating with the surgeon and other health care professionals for an optimal outcome. Assists the anesthesiologist when applicable, patient positioning, prepares skin and draping. Provide wound exposure and appropriate handling of tissue. Assists in controlling blood loss and suturing.
- Performs post-operative duties appropriately. Assists in the safe delivery of patient to the recovery room. Communicates to appropriate healthcare professionals and family members.
- Ability to provide a safe environment for patients requiring surgical procedures..
- Demonstrates proficiency in scrubbing and circulating for surgical procedures.
- Provides instruction to patients entering the surgical suite. Explains procedures to patients thoroughly, provides assistance when necessary, monitors patients’ comfort, and alleviates anxiety during procedures.
- Demonstrates ability to supervise ancillary staff in the management of the surgical suite. Able to direct transportation of the patient, management of supplies and cleaning of the OR suite through ancillary staff as necessary.
- Communicates appropriately and effectively with co-workers, patients and the public, both verbally and in writing as necessary for work assignment.
- Participates in QI activities for the surgical suite.
- Demonstrates competence in the care of infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients (when /if assigned to these patients) relative to determining each patient’s age-related and other physical, psychological and cultural needs and carrying patient care activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Physical demands:
- Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 pounds)
- Occasional prolonged standing/walking
- Occasionally lifts supplies/equipment
- Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching
Working Conditions:
- Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances
- May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases
- Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases
- Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements
- Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries
- Subject to varying and unpredictable situations
Minimum Education/Certification/Experience:
- Associate’s Degree or Diploma from accredited nursing program
- California Registered Nurse
- BLS
- ACLS, PALS within 90 days of hire.
- Sufficient previous clinical experience as a First Assist
