Reporting to the Sterile Processing Manager and/or Supervisor, the Certified Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the processing and maintenance of supplies, instruments and equipment through cleaning, packaging, sterilization and storage procedures for the hospital; responsible for supplies to the OR, and Endoscopy via the case cart system, instrument trays, etc., to the floors as needed; must be able to work with little or no supervision.

Position Accountabilities
1. Accountable for sterilization and operation of sterilization equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of proper sterilization procedure for each item handled.
2. Properly operates cleaning, sterilization and monitoring equipment, ie: Sterrad, steam sterilizers, washer sterilizer, cart washer, sonic cleaner and heat sealers, etc. Accurately tracks instruments utilizing the instrument tracking system.
3. Properly distributes sterilized instruments and supplies, ie: ER, L & D, Endoscopy and NICU, as needed.
4. Demonstrates knowledge of when biological are required per policy and procedure.
5. Properly operates Biological Incubator ie: Steam and Sterrad.
6. Reads and records the Biological values in the Biological Log Books.
7. Accountable for proper cleaning techniques and decontamination of reusable equipment and instrumentation. Disassembles as required.
8. Accurately and efficiently assembles instrument trays and audits assembly of instruments.
9. Picks up reusable instruments, trays and equipment from the units in a timely and thorough manner.
10. Accountable for case cart assembly. Demonstrates working knowledge of case cart system, related supplies and computer. Utilizes the Physicians preferences and selects the appropriate supplies and equipment in a cost effective manner. Prioritizes and uses time efficiently.
11. Fills case carts, exchange carts, emergency carts.
12. Obtains requested supplies in a polite, accurate and timely manner.
13. Accesses and utilizes computer system and prints documents as required.
14. Efficiently and accurately puts Sterile Processing, Operating Room, and Endoscopy supplies and instruments away.
15. Rotates supplies, monitors outdates and assures package integrity.
16. Assists with inventory control of supplies and instruments. Notifies the Sterile Processing Supervisor of Sterile Processing, Endoscopy and Operating Room needs.
17. Acquires supplies from Central Distribution during off-hours as needed, keeps proper documentation and has Central Distribution charge proper cost center.
18. Works efficiently with specialized equipment, trays and instruments.
19. Performs efficiently in crisis and emergency situations, following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons.
20. Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. Demonstrates working knowledge of care and handling of endoscopic instruments; including manual cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, sterilization/processing of instruments and endoscopes. Cares for equipment to prolong useful life.
21. Demonstrates accuracy and flexibility in the work setting.
22. Maintains ongoing education in Sterile Processing and Endoscopy field/certification.
23. Additional responsibilities are outlined on the Skills Checklist, which is to be revised on an on-going basis and reviewed annually at the time of the performance appraisal.
24. Adheres to Sterile Processing Code of Conduct.
25. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: Employees hired after 1/1/2015 must have recently graduated from an accredited Sterile Processing School.
Minimum Experience/Skills: Minimum three months Sterile Processing experience preferred. Minimum one year recent experience in Endoscopy department preferred.
License/Certificates/Credentials: Employees hired after 1/1/2015 must have Sterile Processing Technician Certification
Physical Demands: Frequent standing/walking. Lift/position up to 50 lbs. Push/pull up to 50 lbs of force. Visual perception and acuity, adequate vocal pitch and volume, ability to move quickly. Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity and mobility.
Vision Requirements: Ability to adjust vision sufficiently to perform position accountabilities
Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness), emergency and crisis situations, occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, occasional exposure to radiation hazards, radioactive substances, hazardous chemicals or vapors and biohazard material.
