Reporting to the Lead Physician Assistant (PA) and Chief Executive Officer, the Neurosurgery Nurse Navigator, under the supervision of the surgeon, performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks related to surgery and trauma. Acts as a first or second assistant in surgery. Participates in pre and post-operative patient care. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement/performance improvement activities. The Medical Staff Bylaws and Title 16 of the California Administrative Code grant the NP’s privileges as outlined. Additionally, a Tenet Hospital shall only enter into an employment or independent contractor relationship with a NPP to perform services for purposes of enhancing the efficiency of patient care services. NPPs shall not perform any service for which a Physician is responsible pursuant to the Bylaws, Rules and Regulations or policies of the Medical Staff or for which, in whole or in part, any Physician receives payment (NPP policy).
Responsibilities
1. A Non-Physician Provider may be engaged to provide services in support of Hospital Services. Such services may include implementation of protocols approved by the medical staff in accordance with Hospital policy, patient education, and monitoring compliance with clinical measures and overseeing performance of orders to assure timely care. (NPP Policy).
2. Performs physical and psychosocial assessment and care of patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences. Modifies care to meet the age specific requirements of the infants (31 days to 1 year), and pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescent (13 to 17 years), adult (18 to 69 years) and geriatric (70+ years) patients.
3. Accountable for assisting neurosurgeons in pre and post-operative patient care. Performs and records histories and physical examinations. Orders and reads appropriate laboratory, Radiologic and other diagnostic tests and studies. Summarizes cases prior to surgery. Writes routine pre and post-operative orders and admissions notes.Orders consultations.
4. Acts as first or second assist in surgery. Assists in preparing the patient and equipment for surgery, application of surgical dressings, other duties deemed appropriate by the attending surgeon during surgery, and with monitoring patients in the immediate postoperative period.
5. Conducts rounds of pre and post-operative patients as allowed per the Tenet NPP policy. Notes and reports patient progress, response and complications. Makes appropriate course adjustments and interventions in consult with the attending surgeon. Dictates discharge summaries.
6. Accountable for patient management in coordination with and under the supervision of the surgeon. Completes daily rounds and progress notes on all patients as allowed per the Tenet NPP policy. Enters written orders in the patient record under the guidelines of the Medical Staff Bylaws. Evaluates and assists with the management of neurosurgery and consultations at the request of the surgeon. Responds promptly to all nursing and medical staff queries and pages concerning a patients’ condition or needs. Provides support and education for patient and their families. Acts as a liaison for the surgeon in communication with patients, families and other medical staff. Performs a variety of procedures with and without the direct supervision of the surgeon. Some procedures require proctoring and granting of privileges prior to independent performance of those procedures. Participates in formulating patient care plans and standards in coordination with the medical, nursing and other hospital staff. Maintains accurate records of procedures and patient information for quality assurance and billing purposes.
7. Performs advanced clinical procedures as allowed per the Tenet NPP policy and hospital by-laws. Some procedures require proctoring and granting of privileges prior to independent performance of those procedures.
8. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan. Evaluates patient outcomes on an ongoing basis and prioritizes patient care, modifying the care plan as needed.
9. Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures with specific consideration of patient’s functional and developmental age.
10. Ensures that the operations and care follow Medical Center and department policies and standards.
11.Completes legible, accurate and timely documentation of all nursing care provided to patients, including an evaluation of patients’ response to medications, treatments and procedures.
12. Accesses facility information systems to retrieve and utilize pertinent information for the provision of patient care or in the performance of other job related responsibilities. Follows Medical Center’s policy and procedure as they pertain to all hospital information systems.
13. Participates in activities within the organization that support performance improvement.
14. Maintains required applicable education and in-service requirements and participates in departmental staff meetings (through attendance or reading meeting minutes).
15. Communicates and follows the organization’s chain of command for notification of patient care and/or service issues.
16. Expresses and accepts feedback in a professional manner.
17. Demonstrates the ability to organize workload, set priorities, and use time efficiently to complete work on time and in an organized manner.
18. Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
19. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the professional environment.
20. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Position Qualifications
Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required. Master's Degree in nursing preferred.
Minimum Experience/Skills: 1 to 2 years experience preferred
License/Certificates/Credentials: Current: California RN license; BLS; ACLS;
Physical Demands: Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lift/position up to 50 lbs. Push/pull up to 50 lbs of force. Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity and mobility, ability to move quickly.
Vision Requirements: Sufficient perceptive acuity (vision and hearing) to perform all the related duties of the position. Ability to adjust vision sufficiently to perform position accountabilities
