Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Patient Care Services the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high quality, individualized patient care using the components of the nursing process.

Position Accountabilities  
1. Initiates and participates in a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.                        
2. Adheres to DMC practices for moderate sedation.  Identifies resources for guidelines to ensure safe care and monitoring of patients using evidence-based protocols.                        
3. Ensures that the operations and nursing care follow Medical Center and department policies and standards.  Keeps Manager/Director informed when difficulties and/or unusual situations occur.  As Charge Nurses provides for allotted meal and break periods for staff.                        
4. Delegates’ patient care tasks to ancillary personnel based on individual competency and scope of practice.  Evaluates effectiveness of care performed.                        
5. Performs duties in a manner that provides for the psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient and family.  Completes all assessments in a timely manner; interpreting the neonate’s behavior with an understanding of the physical, emotional and chronological maturation process.  Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings.  Incorporates age-specific considerations, such as functional and developmental age, into the care of the neonate (0 to 30 days) when providing care, performing procedures, or providing comfort.                        
6. Additional responsibilities are outlined on the Clinical Ladder, and are to be documented on the Annual Clinical Ladder Update Journal.                         
7. Manages pain effectively in the neonate (for example, during IV therapy, or lab draws).                        
8. Ensure infant safety and security by applying infant security device to neonatal and monitoring unit continuously for infant safety. Provide family education related to infant security measures during hospitalization.                        
9. Provides appropriate nursing interventions to include (1) gestational age assessment, (2) congenital defect screening, (3) mechanical suctioning, (4) tactile stimulation, (5) gavage and NG feedings, (6) IV placement, and (7) assisting physicians/nurse practitioners with procedures as required, such as intubation and umbilical line placement.                        
10. Performs duties in a manner that provides for the physical, psycho-social and spiritual needs of the critically ill patient with multiple-system failure, including, but not limited to, patients with invasive lines and/or requiring hemodynamic monitoring and patients who are ventilator dependent.                        
 11. Accurately administers complex pharmaco-therapeutics.  Calculates drip rates based on age, weight or other parameters.  Follows established procedures for medication administration.                        
12. Demonstrates the ability to accurately monitor cardiac respiratory rates per unit standards and physicians orders.                        
13. Demonstrates the ability to provide care in emergencies and follows established emergency procedures and practices.  Recognizes and responds appropriately to infants distress and initiates emergency procedures.                        
14. Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills to manage complex patient care situations in accordance with DMC policies and procedures and standards of care.                        
15. Identifies patient family educational needs.  Demonstrates individualized teaching that considers the functional/developmental age and needs of the neonate.  Identifies barriers to infant/maternal bonding and initiates measures to facilitate bonding.  Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of teaching by assessing comprehension and/or return demonstration by the patient family.                        
16. Responsible for acuity of patient and inputting of PCSS.                        
17. Participates in quality initiatives and facilitates the collection of CPQCC data when applicable.                        
18. Demonstrates skill and competence in activities to enhance customer services including:   bedside shift reporting.  “No Pass Zone”.  Performs Charge Nurse rounding on patients when functioning in role of Charge Nurse.                        
19. All other duties as assigned.                        

Qualifications

License/Certificates/Credentials:    
Current: California RN license, BLS certification, NRP certification within four months of hire/transfer, ANR (Within 1 year of hire/transfer. 5+ current NICU level III experience

Physical Demands:    

  • Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking
  • Lift/position up to 50 lbs. Push/pull up to 50 lbs of force.
  • Frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching
  • Manual dexterity and mobility
  • Ability to move quickly

Vision Requirements:   Ability to adjust vision sufficiently to perform position accountabilities       

Working Conditions:

Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness), emergency and crisis situations, subject to irregular hours, occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, occasional exposure to radiation hazards, radioactive substances, and biohazards.

Pay Range: $54.84 - $90.13 hourly **Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
