Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Diagnostic Imaging Services, the Registered Nurse has an indirect reporting relationship to the C.N.O. Daily activities are coordinated through an RN Charge Nurse. The major goal of the Radiology Nurse is to provide quality nursing care to the patient. Skills utilized in his/her job performance include assessment, communication, teaching, leadership, and management. The nurse insures patient privacy and dignity. Areas where the nurse may function are: General diagnostic, special procedures, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, computerized tomography, interventional radiology and magnetic resonance imaging. Fulfills on-call and weekend requirements as required (applies to Interventional Radiology RN Staff only).

1. Performs physical and psychosocial assessment of patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences.  Modifies nursing care to meet the age specific requirements of the newborn (0 to 30 days), pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescent (13 to 17 years), adult (18 to 70 years), and geriatric (71+ years) patients, including but not limited to: growth and development, medications, and special physical and psychosocial needs.                         
2. Provides patient care and management.  Consistently attempts to gain patient cooperation for all examinations the nurse is involved with.  The nurse and/or the physician will always provide an explanation of the examination/procedure.  The physician will explain any risks involved.  Before the examination, the nurse will discuss the need for patient cooperation during the examination.  Obtain a signed consent form.  Consistently record procedural data, as outlined in the “General Guidelines for Documentation” found in the policy and procedure manual.  Measure and record vital signs of patient prior to the procedure to establish a baseline and will physically prepare the patient for the examination to include EKG electrodes and any other physiological equipment as required.  Monitors patients vital signs and electrocardiogram during the procedure and will evaluate any unusual EKG readings as artifact, or will alert physician in case of serious patient distress.                        
3. Monitors and calibrates equipment.  Monitors and maintains medical equipment attached to the patient (e.g., IV’s, Oxygen) during the procedure, using knowledge of hospital equipment, protocol, and procedure.  Adjusts and calibrates the pressure transducers used for intra-vascular pressures.                        
4. Maintains supplies in the department.  Maintains procedural inventory of sterile supplies and medications.  Prepares materials or trays with medication and materials for special treatments or procedures.  Prepares the treatment or examination area using sterile technique, including cleansing of the area of needle puncture and catheter insertion to include the required sterile drapes and covers, and uses sterile or aseptic techniques as required to help prevent infection.  Assists Radiologists with special procedures and treatments that require professional nursing skills.                         
5. Follows standard practices for medication administration.  In conjunction with Radiologist, fill the automatic syringe of the pressure injector and set the injection parameters with specific attention to the total volume of contrast media, cc/second, elapsed injection time and injection pressure (psi).                       
6. Assists in transporting critically ill patients as required.  Make patient care decisions with a minimum of supervision/direction, and performs certain examinations and portions of examinations with a minimum of physician supervision; provides input to administration and physicians as to the appropriate conduct of various exams and the proper pre and post procedure care of the patient.  Prioritize patient’s needs and requests for assistance from various sections of the department and responds to each in a timely manner.  Provides in-service training to members of the technical staff regarding crash carts, IV infusion pumps and other specialized equipment as requested.  Assists with the orientation of nurses, physicians, technologists, and students.                        
7. Provides emergency care when indicated.  Recognizes and takes immediate action to remedy adverse reaction to contract media and/or administered medication, recognizing and distinguishing between allergic type and hemodynamic responses.  Recognizes the need for medical attention and administers emergency care, including CPR.                        
8. Acts as a resource person for nursing, medical and radiology staff.  Assists with Quality Assurance and Risk Management programs and help develop evaluation of policies and procedures within the Diagnostic Imaging Department.  Monitors emergency equipment and documents.                                              
9. All other duties as assigned.                        

Minimum Experience/Skills:    

2 - 3 Years of experience.  Preferred experience to include Critical Care, Radiology and/or Cardiology.                

License/Certificates/Credentials:

Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of California, ACLS Certification, PALS certification, Basic Dysrhythmia course                

Physical Demands:

Frequent standing/walking. Lift/position up to 50 lbs. Push/pull up to 50 lbs of force. Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity and mobility, touch, auditory and visual perception and acuity, adequate vocal pitch and volume, ability to move quickly.

Vision Requirements:  Normal vision with or without corrective lenses                    

Working Conditions:    

Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness), emergency and crisis situations, subject to irregular hours, increased stress due to multiple calls and inquiries,
Occasional exposure to radiation hazards, radioactive substances and biohazard material

Pay Range: $58.37 - $86.59 hourly **Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
