Position Summary:
Reporting to the Quality Manager, the Quality Review nurse supports the medical staff and hospital in identifying opportunities to improve the quality and safety of care for patient through data analysis and process improvement efforts. This position uses rigious case and statistical analysis to identify gaps in performance and leads multidisciplanary teams to achieve the facilities goal of being a Top 10% hospital for quality and safety.
1. Ensure that the requirements of the Operative/Invasive policy are met which would include: a) Send required records to the external peer review program. b) Identify cases that meet criteria for peer review, summarizing and reviewing with the appropriate medical staff individual. c) Support physicians in ensuring procedure appropriateness documentation (prospective and retrospective as applicable).
2. With the medical staff chair and hospital leadership (DCQI, CNO, Cath Lab Director and OR Directors), identify mortality and complication trends and facilitate rapid cycle improvements to achieve clinical goals using Six Sigma, Lean and PDSA methodologies as appropriate.
3. As directed by policy, abstract cases for focused review and enter results into the JDI Peer Review Database and reporting peer review data to the assigned departments.
4. Compile and prepare data for medical staff meetings conforming to acceptable standards of data presentation, accuracy and integrity. Providing detailed and complete case summaries and producing peer review documents. Maintain the confidentiality of the peer review process in accordance with state law and hospital policy.
5. Using Crimson Continuum of Care system, provide trends and cases from administrative data that should be clarified through coding queries, and routing appropriately.
6. Oversee any outsourced data abstraction service and maintain data validity, accuracy and timeliness.
7. Proactively notify the DCQI of any potential missed deadlines and escalate issues prior to deadlines
Minimum Education:
Current BSN or associate in nursing with significant quality and clinical experience.
Prefer MSN, MHA or MBA
Minimum Experience/Skills:
One to three years experience in an interventional cardiac cath lab or cardiovascular surgical operating room and three to six years quality review experience with Society of Thoracic Surgeons, California CABG Outcomes Reporting Program and National Cardiovascular Data Registry. Proficient in Excel including data analysis and QI Macros for statistical reporting. Experience with facilitating process improvement in an acute care setting required.
License/Certificates/Credentials:
Current California RN licensure. Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality required within 1 year of hire. Certification in Lean or Six Sigma for Healthcare preferred.
Physical Demands:
Lift/position up to 25 lbs. Push/pull up to 25 lbs of force. Moderate sitting, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and bending, manual dexterity, mobility, touch, auditory to perform all the related duties of the position, adequate vocal pitch and volume
Vision Requirements:
Sufficient perceptive acuity (vision and hearing) to perform all the related duties of the position.
Working Conditions:
Subject to irregular hours based on the demands of the job, moderate pressure due to multiple calls, inquiries, and time demands, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, occasional exposure to risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, occasional exposure to unpleasant elements.
