Responsibilities
Position Accountabilities
1. Determines staffing requirements to assure safe and competent patient care. Considers patient acuity, age specific needs of patients, staff skill mix, and individual patient’s plan of care when making assignments. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in volume, emergencies, staffing, or schedule changes
2. Assists the Nurse Director with employee evaluations and performance management. Utilizes observation techniques, chart review, and patient interviews to evaluate staff nurse performance and quality of patient care delivered. Assists employees to improve/maintain performance by establishing goals with measurable performance outcomes, action plans, and time frames.
3. Monitors the safety of the work environment.
4. Assists Director with schedules, time and attendance, quality improvement projects, reports, documents, and files.
5. Seeks and accepts responsibility for committee participation, special projects, and teaching presentations.
6. Adheres to DMC practices for pain management with specific consideration of patient’s functional/ developmental age, gender, cultural and/or personal preferences.
7. Demonstrates appropriate use of restraints per DMC policy and procedures.
8. Provides appropriate nursing interventions. Competent in all routine nursing skills and identified unit-specific skills.
9. Demonstrates the ability to provide appropriate interventions in patient care emergencies, and all Codes, and follows established emergency procedures.
10. Determines the presence and type of Advance Directive, as appropriate. Contacts appropriate resources to assist the patient and family as needed.
11. Delegates patient care tasks to ancillary personnel based on individual competency and scope of practice. Evaluates effectiveness of care performed.
12. Communicates and follows the organization’s chain of command for notification of patient care and/or service issues.
13. Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures ie: Fall, Seizure, and Aspiration precautions, and following isolation protocols
14. Performs physical and psychosocial assessment of patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences. Modifies nursing care to meet the age specific requirements of the adult (18 to 70 years) and geriatric (71+ years) patients including, but not limited to: growth and development, medications, and special physical and psychosocial needs.
15. Additional responsibilities are outlined on the Clinical Ladder, and are to be documented on the Annual Evaluation Checklist.
16. Considers the special needs of patients when making patient assignments, including patients requiring mechanical ventilation and telemetry patients.
17. Provide care to telemetry patients. Monitors and responds to life threatening dysrhythmia on telemetry and takes appropriate action.
18. Demonstrates noise reduction efforts in the department, and assists in maintaining traffic control in the department.
19. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
Minimum Experience/Skills: Three to five years clinical experience in area of focus, RN skills as described for designated unit, Managerial Communications preferred.
License/Certificates/Credentials: Current: California RN license, BLS certification, ACLS certification
Physical Demands: Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lift/position up to 50 lbs. Push/pull up to 50 lbs of force. Frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity and mobility, ability to move quickly.
Vision Requirements: Ability to adjust vision sufficiently to perform position accountabilities
Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness), emergency and crisis situations, subject to irregular hours, occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, occasional exposure to radiation hazards, radioactive substances, and biohazards.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Patient Care Services Director, the Shift Manager utilizes the nursing process and organizational/ leadership skills to coordinate services of staff to patients during the designated shift. Assures patient care is appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served. Assesses staff need for the unit, collaborates with the staffing coordinator, Nurse Director, and Administrative Nursing Supervisor to ensure patients needs are met.
