Reporting to the Director of Imaging Services, the Sonographer is responsible for operating diagnostic ultrasound equipment in a safe manner while exercising independent judgment in order to obtain diagnostic images on patients of all ages for subsequent evaluation by a qualified physician.

Responsibilities

Position Accountabilities   
1. Provides services to patients that demonstrate knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences.  Modifies care and preparation to meet the age specific requirements of the newborn (0 to 30 days), pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescent (13 to 17 years), adult (18 to 70 years), and geriatric (71+ years) patients.  Applies age-specific considerations to care, such as the need for additional safety measures; observations of skin integrity; behavior, and effective communication.                        
2. Scans patient with skill and knowledge. 
a. Positioning, comfort and safety of patients.
b. Uses appropriate protocol and guidelines set by AIUM.
c. Selects proper transducer for exam.
d. Obtains diagnostic images on patients of all ages for interpretation by Radiologist or Cardiologist and records information for permanent record.
e. Assists physician as needed during invasive procedures utilizing sterile technique.
f. Communicates with and observes patient during scan.
g. Logs appropriate information on printed forms provided for exam and patient information in record books. 
h. Maintains reports in file cabinets.              
3. Meets Quality Control criteria established by reading physician and DMC on a daily basis.
a. Documentation of exam on film video, or print.
b. Selects proper format and gray scale.
c. Photographs and develops film in accordance with standard.
d. Complete scan related worksheet and logs required information on daily control sheets.
e. Reviews exam with reading physician and/or places exam results in designated area.
4. Patient exam preparation.
a. Demonstrates knowledge of clinical information and practices essential to assuring provision of age-specific and cultural care to infants (31 days to 1 year), pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescents (13 to 17 years), adults (18 to 70 years), and geriatric patients (71+ years).
b. Interviews patient to see if the proper prep has been followed.
c. Explains exam procedure to the patient and tries to put the patient at ease.
d. Communicates with nursing staff and signs the patient out with chart when transporting patient to the lab.
e. Regularly practices aseptic technique.
f. Always washes hands before and after exam.
g. Always checks patients ID band before start of exam.
h. Demonstrates competence in transporting patients to exam table.                  
5. Build and maintain effective working relationships.  
a. Build and maintain effective working relationships with others.
b. Interact with patients, physicians, employees and visitors in a friendly and cordial manner both in person and while on the telephone.
c. Practices telephone courtesy.
d. Creates good first impression and maintain appropriate client contact.
e. In maintaining guest standards, maintains self-composure during pleasant and unpleasant situations.
f. Develops relationships promoting cooperation, trust, and teamwork with associates.
g. Willingly accepts direction.          
6. Maintains Ultrasound Equipment.
a. Handles and stores transducers carefully.
b. Wipes gel off after each patient.
c. Sterilizes invasive transducers after each use with Cidex for twenty (20) minutes i.e., post trans-vaginal exams, post trans-esophageal exams, post trans-rectal exams.
d. Wipes down equipment and cleans filter on a weekly basis.
e. Reports mechanical or transducer problems to supervisors as soon as possible.
f. Keeps work area neat and clean.             
7. Responsible for monitoring room supplies.
a. Restocks supplies after use.
b. Notifies supervisors as soon as possible when special order supplies are low.
c. Maintains organized supply drawers and cabinets.
d. Provides technical assistance to co-workers when needed.
e. Attempts to stay current in field by reading journals and attending seminars.
f. Maintains CME credit if registered.
g. May be requested to train less experienced Sonographers in other modalities or be being available to respond to questions regarding Ultrasound.                  
8. Continues education.
a. Provides technical assistance to co-workers when needed.
b. Attempts to stay current in field by reading journals and attending seminars.
c. Maintains CME credit if registered.
d. May be responsible for learning other modalities or instructions.                    
9. Works appropriately with the scope of his/her license and/or position authority.                        
10. Demonstrates initiative and creativity in assigned work, consistently attempting to make things work better.                         
11. Performs work in an honest and ethical manner with sensitivity to those affected by the decisions made.                         
12. Actively listens to the point of view of others, and acts appropriately on the information received.                        
13. All other duties as assigned.                        

Qualifications

Minimum Education: Must have completed an Ultrasound Academic Program.         

Minimum Experience/Skills: 1+ years experience as an Sonographer is preferred.  

License/Certificates/Credentials: Must be registered by ARDMS.  RDMS is required at time of hire with a certification in one of the three specialties (Abdomen, OB/GYN, or Vascular). The second specialty certification must be obtained within 12 months and the third specialty certification must be obtain within 18 months. All three specialties must be obtained within 18 months as a condition of employment. Must have current BLS Certification.        

Physical Demands: Frequent sitting/standing/walking. Lift/position up to 50 lbs. Push/pull up to 50 lbs of force. Transfer patients, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity and mobility, touch, auditory and visual perception and acuity, adequate vocal pitch and volume, ability to move quickly.   

Vision Requirements: Ability to adjust vision sufficiently to perform duties.           

Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness), emergency and crisis situations
Subject to irregular hours, increased stress due to multiple calls and inquiries, occasional exposure to radiation hazards, radioactive substances and biohazard material.
