Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and level I trauma facility with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department. Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Adheres to and supports the mission, purpose, philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of Tenet Physician Resources.
- Adheres to the Tenet HIPAA Compliance Plan and the Privacy Standards Confidentiality Agreement.
- Demonstrates support for the Tenet Corporate Compliance Program by being knowledgeable of compliance responsibilities as expressed in the Code of Conduct; adhering to federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and corporate policies and procedures policies that affect his/her specific job functions/responsibilities; and reporting compliance issues/concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Assists in the assessment of patient needs and health plan by taking vital signs, history, medication listing, assessing visual acuity and determining chief complaint. Assesses patients’ physical and mental status.
- Completes all necessary documentation in the patient’s medical record in accordance with practice’s charting policy.
- Prepares equipment and assists physicians with medical treatments, exams and medical procedures
- Administers prescribed oral medications and gives intramuscular and subcutaneous and intradermal injections. Performs venipunctures, CLIA-Waived and non-CLIA Waived lab testing.
- Maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment for patients and visitors. This includes cleaning, sterilizing, and storing instruments in accordance with practice policies. Stocks rooms in preparation for the daily work schedule. Takes inventory of medical and exam room supplies.
- Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, and other hazardous substances.
- Arranges for specialized consultations and appointments for testing as ordered by the physicians. Notifies appropriate insurance personnel to pre-certify surgeries or tests ordered by the physician or other health care provider, which require pre-certification by the insurance company.
- Answering office phones, assisting front desk in scheduling appointments and directing calls appropriately.
- Assists in checking out patients and assists them with referral processing and scheduling process
- Assist in other functions of the physician practice as needed
*Note: Although the term “physician” is used throughout this job description; it is recognized that this position will also assist with other healthcare professionals including nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Maintains positive, helpful and caring attitude toward patients, co-workers, and physicians.
1. Initiates patient intake process
a. Cleans and prepares exam room for next patient prior to bringing patient in room.
b. Greets patient by name and escorts patient through the care process; identifies self and explains role during visit.
c. Interviews patient for medication history ensuring accuracy of medications and doses.
d. Obtains anthropometrics including, height, weight, blood pressure/pulse, waist measurement, and temperature.
e. Assists patient with undressing and explains exam procedure.
f. Notifies physician of abnormal vital signs.
2. Assists Physicians
a. Assists physician with patient physical exams, dry sterile dressings, cultures or other tasks ordered by physician.
b. Performs other procedures as determined by the unit and when directed.
c. Arranges scheduling of appointments: e.g., follow-up appointments, education and consultations.
d. Ensures physician completes consultation and requisition forms as needed. Prepare and send referrals to the appropriate location as needed.
e. Prepare all necessary paperwork for outside lab and other forms (insurance, disability, etc) when necessary.
f. Alerts physicians to important tasks that are needed
3. Unit Responsibility
a. Cleans and restocks exam rooms; clinical and educational materials.
b. Participates in daily assignment of rooms and staff to facilitate patient flow.
c. Works collaboratively with registration staff to keep patients and providers informed of schedule changes.
d. Receives telephone calls regarding patient prescriptions, pulls patient charts, routes to physician, and contacts pharmacy regarding refill. Log all prescriptions refills & new prescriptions in the patient chart.
e. Checks medical supplies and drugs for expiration dates. Monitor back office supplies and restock exam rooms daily. Assist with inventory maintenance and report supply shortages to clinic director. Assist with unpacking and stocking of back office supply deliveries.
f. Ensures medical records are ready the day prior to scheduled patient visit. Maintains all chart material. Files lab work, operative reports, x-rays, etc.
g. Provides regular phone outreach to patients and families to ensure appropriate medical and education follow-up.
h. Schedule appointments as necessary.
i. Assists in meeting MBSAQIP required standards
j. Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifications
Required:
- Medical Assistant Board Certified: Must be NCMA or CCMA-C. Must obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Current BLS certification (American Heart Association - maintain current at all times)
- 6 months recent experience in a bariatric or obesity medicine office setting, including front office experience
- Proficient in word processing and business machines and in the use of English grammar
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent communication (written/verbal/use of English grammar)
- Ability to multi task with effective time management skills
- Professional appearance at all times
Preferred:
- Experience with Electronic Health Records
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
- Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10
- Knowledge of the local geographic area

Pay Range: $23.00 - $23.90 hourly **Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
