Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385 bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and level 2 trauma facility with an innovative , patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department. Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.

GENERAL DUTIES:

The nursing assistant provides patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Access to all Patient Health Information for treatment purposes only.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Age Specific Responsibilities

  1. Obtains information and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development applicable to the range of ages normally seen on the Unit.
  3. Understands the range of treatment needed as appropriate to the ages of the patients normally seen on the Unit.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  1. Attends report at the beginning of the shift and assumes responsibility for assigned groups of patients
  2. Interventions are based on the patient’s plan of care, under the direction of the Licensed Nurses.
  3. Employs principles of communication, interviewing techniques, and problem solving when performing interventions.
  4. Performs general nursing procedures and treatments (within scope of practice) and reports significant findings to the Registered Nurse.
  5. Gathers data, which will enable the nurse to plan the course of interventions for the patient.
  6. Accurately collects data needed for the admission assessment.
  7. Takes and records vital signs accurately and properly.
  8. Observes for and communicates to Licensed Nurses, any changes in patient’s appearance, behavior and ability to work toward goals.
  9. Reports signs and symptoms of infection to the Charge Nurse.
  10. Organizes and provides care to assigned patients.
  11. Rounds on assigned patients to ensure needs are met.
  12. Performs and documents accurate Intake & Output on the Graphic Record.
  13. Performs and documents ADL activities each shift.
  14. Performs, accurately reports, and documents admission and weekly weights.
  15. Aware of patients individualized plan of care including goals and interventions.
  16. Provides information to the Licensed Nurses that assist in the development and revision of the plan of care.
  17. Provision of appropriate information to the patient/family that assists them in the attainment of the goals identified in the care plan.
  18. Carries out appropriate teaching activities identified in the treatment plan under the supervision of the Licensed Nurses.
  19. Re-enforces importance of compliance with treatment procedures.
  20. Orients patients to unit.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supports changes in clinical practice and assists the Department Director implementing changes in hospital policies or practices.
  2. Functions as a resource to co-workers.
  3. Participates in orientation of new staff as needed.
  4. Ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Assume responsibility for knowledge and implementation of policy, procedure, and practice.
  5. Maintains current CNA certification and CPR certification.
  6. Maintains competence in practice through attending in services and participation in ongoing continuing education per year.
  7. Participates in the Quality Improvement Program as requested by Unit Director. Is observant of staff performance and practices, and reports deficiencies to Department Director.
  8. Follows appropriate chain of command for problem resolution approaching problem solving with a positive attitude and suggestions.
  9. Maintains and improves current knowledge of regulations pertaining to long-term care.
  10. Reports any observed unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel.
  11. Reports potential crises Situations to the nurse in charge.
  12. Utilizes standard precautions. Ensures others observed follow Standard Precautions..
  13. Reports malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate department timely.
  14. Ensures call lights are answered timely... Reports patient needs, which are outside of scope of practice to the appropriate personnel.
  15. Adheres to hospital attendance/tardiness policy.
  16. Demonstrates guest relations in communication, cooperation and in giving assistance to patients, physicians, co-workers and visitors in a prompt and courteous manner. Exceeding the component is demonstrated by the Unit achieving 4 or 5 star PSMS scores overall in a majority of months of the year.
  17. Acts as the patients advocate and assures that patient rights are upheld.
  18. Observes for and promptly reports to the appropriate Clinical Manager, Director or Ombudsman, and observed patient abuse. Immediately intervenes appropriately if observes abuse in order to protect the patient from harm. Understands the law as it pertains to mandated reporting.
  19. Participates in all Code Blue, Fire, Disaster and other emergency drill when present to ensure knows role in event of actual emergency.
  20. Attends all Ethics and other education required by the Hospital, Unit or Director.
  21. Other duties as appropriately assigned by Unit Director

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Education High School Diploma or GED
  • Entry level, vocational training, specialized skills, certification and/ or experience.
  • Ability to work with nursing staff, patients and families. Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Current California Nursing Assistant Certification (maintain current at all times).
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification (maintain current at all times).

Non-violent crisis de-escalation training (CPI) within (90) ninety days of hire

Pay Range: $20.15 - $20.57

Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
