Responsibilities:

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:              

  • Serve as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME) “Designated Institutional Official (DIO)” with authority and responsibility for oversight and administration of all GME programs sponsored within the Division;
  • Provide leadership and organize resources to enable the GME-sponsoring institution to achieve substantial compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements, thereby maintaining ACGME Accreditation;
  • Ensure the annual review and approval of a statement of institutional commitment to GME that specifies, at a minimum, a commitment to providing necessary educational, financial and human resources;
  • Develop and maintain all affiliation agreements with other institutions that provide training to residents/fellows;
  • Serve as a liaison with medical school affiliates;
  • Contribute, as requested, to corporate strategic plan development for medical education;
  • Review and co-sign all correspondence or documents submitted to the ACGME that address educational deficiency citations or significant changes in the institution or its programs, including financial, that effect their ability to meet accreditation standards;

 Prepare an annual report of GME activities in accordance with ACGME/ AOA requirements pertinent to content and present to hospital leadership with written copy to the OPTI.  The annual report will review activities of the Graduate Medical Education. Committee and programs with attention to: 

  1. The supervision, responsibilities, and evaluation of interns, residents and fellows

              ii.           Compliance with the duty hour standards and at affiliated institutions

              iii.          Internal review activities

              iv.          Outcomes of safety initiatives, patient care quality improvement and inter-                                             professional teams where trainees are core members

v.           Progress on Core Competencies and identified goals for the program(s) in preparation for the new academic year

  • Develop all policies, protocols and guidelines necessary for the administration and conduct of GME at the institutional and program levels;
  • Oversee the management and job performance evaluation of all personnel in the Department of Graduate Medical Education’s table of organization; 
  • Recruit and provide necessary support for professional educators, information specialists, and operations personnel necessary for the educational and administrative conduct of the Department of Graduate Medical Education;
  • Develop educational programs at the institutional level for implementation across all GME programs;
  • Oversee preparation of the Institutional Review Document (IRD) and all other elements required for the periodic reaccreditation of the institution by the ACGME;
  • Conduct regular internal program reviews in accordance with all ACGME requirements and institutional protocols;
  • Help maintain all necessary records, documents and databases for programs, residents, fellows and the institution necessary for regulatory and accrediting purposes and for GME reimbursement as mandated by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS);
  • Maintain and update the resident and fellow contract for employment, including salaries and all benefits;
  • Work with internal/outside legal counsel, and Human Resources to assure compliance with all immigration and visa laws and requirements for international medical graduates enrolled as residents and fellows;
  • Assist the Finance personnel with the development of the annual Graduate Medical Education budget;
  • Oversee payment of all ACGME/ AOA institutional and program fees;
  • Develop and assure the conduct of all activities necessary for the orientation of new residents and fellows;
  • Act as the institutional official for the National Resident Matching Program match and for the AOA Match.

 

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Possession of an MD, DO (required for DME, PhD or Master’s degree(s) in Education, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Business or another related field will be considered;
  • Graduate of a COCA-approved College of Osteopathic Medicine (DME)
  • Minimum of 3 years of administrative experience in GME. Prior experience as an institution’s ACGME Designated Institutional Official (DIO)  or AOA DME of an accredited residency / fellowship or three years experience as teaching faculty;
  • AOA Board certification for DME
  • Member in good standing of AOA for DME
  • Member in good standing of AODME

Possession of knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable function at “expert” level for most if not all “AAMC Core Competencies for Institutional GME/DIOs,” and for those not at “expert” level, has the capabilities and motivation to attain “expert” level.

Description

Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and level 2 trauma facility with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department.  Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.

GENERAL DUTIES:

The Vice-President of Medical Education/Designated Institution Official (DIO)/ Director of Medical Education )DME) is responsible for the administrative oversight of the Graduate Medical Education (GME interns, residents, and fellows) programs and activities. GME programs across the hospital are subject to the oversight responsibility of this position. All job description items that follow are pertinent to the DIO / DME primary job assignment overseeing GME programs across the hospital.

Pay Range: $83.36 - $133.37 **Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience ***Calculated based on a full time position
