GENERAL DUTIES:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) contributes to the efficiency of clinic operations and assists in facilitating the effectiveness of the physician(s) workflow. The CMA/RMA assists with patient care, patient intake at office visits, documentation, and administration of medications and/or vaccines as well as clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Ensures the cleanliness and safety of clinical areas, maintains stock of necessary supplies and equipment, and prepares the patient for examination when needed. Provides the physicians clinical assistance in addition to providing support to the front office staff. Prepares and completes referral orders and schedules patients for diagnostic tests. Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide excellent care to each patient, as pertinent to the scope of the specialty of the office setting. 
  • Continuously uphold DRMC’s Service Standards and ICON’s Policies and Procedures, responsibilities, and applicable state, federal, and local laws. 
  • Pre-visit planning with provider/care team and advance chart preparations as necessary.
  • Follow patient rooming/intake workflow as specified by the practice, check and document timely required vital signs (HT, WT, BP) and any other vitals as requested by the physician(s), and assist provider with medical exam as needed.
  • Evaluate patients during intake for any immediate medical needs and report to provider. 
  • Perform accurate charting within the electronic medical record which may include, but not limited to: detailing and/or updating past and present medical history, reviewing and/or updating the medication and allergy information, ensuring the pharmacy information is up to date, record and update smoking/tobacco history, as well as other applicable documentation needs based on CMS Meaningful Use requirements and per the scope of practice or specialty. This information is required to be entered real time.33
  • Utilize AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, Thank) at all times with any patient interactions while rooming, receiving patient complaints, gathering history, and when any pertinent comments are made. 
  • Administer medications (including injections) and perform any necessary procedures per scope of licensure and per provider order.
  • Prepare exam rooms in advance and in between patients by sanitizing and stocking with appropriate equipment, instruments, and supplies prior to exam. 
  • Monitor back office supplies and restock exam rooms daily. Assist with inventory maintenance and report supply shortages to the back office supervisor; and also assist with unpacking and stocking of delivered supplies. 
  • Assist with completing any needed forms (e.g. insurance forms, workers comp forms, disability forms, etc.)
  • Maintain all chart material in electronic medical record. (e.g. X-rays, operative reports, path reports, etc.) 
  • Assist with front office workflow as needed and as patient flow permits. Schedule follow-up appointments, surgeries, and procedures as necessary as it pertains to patient flow.
  • Cover physician and/or workload for absentee employees as necessary. Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of instruments, exam rooms, and all treatment areas (e.g., surgery, lab, cast room, etc.) as needed or directed. 
  • Follow current policies and procedures for collection and labeling of all specimens using appropriate media. Maintain up to date knowledge of medications, sterile techniques, and current policies and procedures.
  • Maintain current/active licenses/certificates including, but not limited to; CMA/RMA certification per accreditation requirements and BLS/CPR certification. 
  • Assist provider to complete coding and charging in a timely and accurate manner. 
  • Dispose of contaminated/non-contaminated sharps in the appropriate, clearly marked disposal container. 
  • Access and interpret needed information from facility MSDS book or MSDS on-line in a prompt manner. 
  • Respond to and participate in all clinical emergencies and maintenance of emergency equipment. 
  • Adhere to infection control, universal precautions, and use of personal protective equipment as needed for all patient care procedures, maintenance of equipment, and disposal of waste. 
  • Receive and respond within the practice determined turnaround time to telephone calls, faxes, and electronic requests regarding patient prescriptions. Review patient charts in the electronic medical record, communicate the request to the physician, and contact pharmacies as needed. Utilize e-prescribing in electronic medical record as the main route of sending prescriptions or refill requests at the direction of the provider.  Log all prescription refills and new prescriptions in the patients’ electronic health record.
  • Act as a team player by taking the initiative in doing whatever task is necessary to assure efficient functioning of the office and to provide the highest quality of care to patients and companies who request our services. 
  • Responsible for sending consult notes to all referring physicians once all documentation is complete after the date of service at ICON.
  • Perform any additional/miscellaneous duties (not inclusive of job description) as requested by the management team within the scope of licensure. 

Qualifications

Required:           

 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduate of a Certified Medical Assistant program
  • Current certification as a CMA or RMA maintained current at all times – by CA State or one of the following National Organizations:
    • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
    • American Medical Technologist (AMT)
    • National HealthCareer Association (NHA)
    • National Healthcare Worker’s Association (NHCWA)
    • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
    • American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • Current BLS/CPR certification   
  • Previous work experience in a medical clinic with electronic medical record usage in previous positions 
  • Qualified candidate must excel in interpersonal communication and customer service and be able to work both independently and as part of a team 
  • Candidate must also excel in organizational skills and attention to details and demonstrate follow through 
  • Must have the ability to effectively problem solve to logical conclusion and demonstrate initiative and responsibility
  • Must be able to effectively and clearly communicate (written and verbal) in English

 

Preferred Qualifications:        

 

  • Knowledge of CPT and ICD10 preferred 
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
