GENERAL DUTIES:
Assists in the delivery of orthopedic care through application, removal, and maintenance of casts, dressings, traction, and other orthopedic devices. May instruct patients on cast care, crutch training, skin care, and hygiene, under the direction of the supervising physician. In addition, the orthopedic technician may scrub on orthopedic surgical procedures. The technician may have the responsibility for instrument preparation and assembly of orthopedic tables and equipment.
The orthopedic technician may NOT perform the following tasks:
- Prescribe medication
- Admit or discharge patients
- Interpret lab tests, x-rays, or diagnostic studies
- Place pins for skeletal fracture
- Set/manipulate bones
- Suture or tie suture
- Clamp or cut tissue
Responsibilities
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:
• Adhere to DRMC’s service standards and ICON practice standards
• Supports the physician during casting procedures.
o Supplies and equipment are assembled as appropriate for procedures.
o Additional supplies and equipment are procured during procedure as needed.
o Supplies are restocked as used during the procedure and after the procedure.
o Patients are adequately prepared for the casting procedure.
o Casts are applied according to the physician’s request.
o Repairs and removal of casts are performed in compliance with physician’s requests.
• Supports the physician with reduction of dislocations and fractures.
o Supplies and equipment are assembled as appropriate for procedures.
o Additional supplies and equipment are procured during procedure as needed.
o Supplies are restocked as used during the procedure and after the procedure.
o Patients are adequately prepared for the procedure.
o Traction equipment is set up correctly and to the specifications requested by the physician.
• Maintains necessary skills and competencies to support department.
o Changes in materials, methods and biomechanics are monitored and competency is maintained.
o Strengths and opportunities for professional development are identified and goals for self-improvement
o are set and documented appropriately.
o Identified goals for professional development are met through a variety of educational forums.
o The education and development of others is fostered by sharing information learned through individual
o professional development.
o A positive environment conducive to professional development of coworkers is demonstrated on an

o Environmental factors affecting patient/staff safety are checked on an ongoing basis.
o Patients are appropriately identified prior to implementation of any intervention.
o Incidents involving self, patients, staff and/or visitors are communicated to appropriate parties using the
o institution’s quality reporting mechanism.
o Knowledge of institution’s fire/safety/infection control programs is consistently demonstrated in practice.
o Proper body mechanics and use of appropriate assistive devices are routinely demonstrated

Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
• Graduate of a formal training program or equivalent experience with documented competency.
• Current American Heart Association BLS Certification (maintain current at all times).
Preferred:
• National Certification preferred.
