Job Summary

Shift: Days

Provide pharmaceutical services for patients and disseminate drug information to nursing and medical staff maintaining the highest standards of patient care that is consistent with the philosophy and goals of the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

These services further the vision of Desert Regional Medical Center to create unique environments, where patients, their families, doctors and staff come together to achieve longer and better lives in the fight against cancer.

Responsibilities

Reviews physician orders and recommends changes according to FDA approved indications, standard chemotherapy protocols, and investigational drug studies.  Recommends to physician any dosage adjustments for drugs based on the patient’s height, weight, body surface area, blood count values, renal function, or liver function.

Prepares all intravenous admixtures according to documented stability and diluent guidelines.

Provides drug information to physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team upon verbal request or through formal in-service.

Counsels patients about uses and side effects of medications.  Also instructs patients on the operation of ambulatory infusion devices.

Maintains written and computerized patient profiles containing all doses of chemotherapy dispensed.

Maintains drug data including adequate drug inventory by ordering items daily, maintaining accurate narcotic inventory control by recording daily counts and transfers to the nursing station of controlled substances, log of all chemotherapy drugs dispensed and their corresponding manufacturers, lot numbers, and expiration dates, accurate storage, accountability, and distribution records for all investigational drugs, and maintains log of ambulatory pumps currently being used by patients.

Utilizes computer to generate charge reports. Records drug purchases and generates monthly inventory reports using spreadsheet software, Microsoft Excel.

Identifies and reports pharmacy interventions and adverse drug reactions.

Identifies and segregates expired medications monthly.

Qualifications

Required: 
•    Posses a valid CA pharmacist’s license (maintain current at all times)
•    BS Pharmacy from accredited college
•    Complies with regulatory requirements (i.e. TJC) appropriate for position
•    2 years’ oncology experience and aseptic technique
•    Good verbal and written communication skills; computer literate

Preferred: 
•    PharmD. completion of an ASHP residency program.  Masters or other post-graduate degree.
•    Current American Heart Association BLS
