Position Summary
The Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) is a key member of the hospital’s nursing leadership team, partnering closely with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to advance clinical excellence, operational performance, and an exceptional patient and employee experience.
The ACNO provides leadership for assigned nursing departments and leaders, translating strategic priorities into action and ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. This highly visible role offers the opportunity to influence nursing practice across the organization, develop future nursing leaders, and drive meaningful improvements in quality, workforce, and operational outcomes.
The ACNO may act on behalf of the CNO when designated and serves as an important partner to physicians, hospital executives, nursing leaders, and interdisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for assigned nursing departments, service lines, and nursing leaders.
- Partner with the CNO to implement nursing strategy, clinical priorities, and organizational goals.
- Lead, coach, and develop nursing directors and managers while building a strong pipeline of future nursing leaders.
- Drive improvements in patient safety, clinical quality, patient experience, employee engagement, and operational performance.
- Ensure appropriate staffing, skill mix, competency, and resource allocation based on patient care needs.
- Support workforce planning, recruitment, retention, succession planning, and leadership development.
- Use clinical, operational, workforce, and financial data to identify opportunities and implement effective improvement strategies.
- Promote evidence-based practice, shared decision-making, professional nursing standards, and a culture of continuous improvement.
- Partner with physicians and leaders across Quality, Human Resources, Finance, Operations, and other functions to achieve hospital-wide goals.
- Support nursing budgets, labor productivity, expense management, and responsible allocation of resources.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, professional practice, and organizational standards.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, inclusion, and service excellence.
- Lead and support organizational change, performance improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
- Participate in administrative call coverage and act on behalf of the CNO when designated.
Qualifications
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
- A Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business, Public Health, Management, or a related field strongly preferred or required based on facility needs.
Licensure & Certification
- Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license as required by the state of practice.
- Current CPR/BLS certification as required by the facility.
- Nursing executive certification such as CENP or NEA-BC preferred.
Experience
- Progressive nursing leadership experience in an acute-care hospital environment.
- Demonstrated success leading clinical operations, nursing teams, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Experience developing nursing leaders and building collaborative relationships with physicians and interdisciplinary partners.
- Strong understanding of quality, patient safety, regulatory requirements, workforce management, and hospital operations.

Compensation
A competitive compensation program will be tailored to the selected candidate. Base salary will be supplemented by a performance bonus and comprehensive, well-rounded benefits program, which includes relocation assistance.
Travel
Approximately 25 percent. Ability to travel in market. Selected candidate will be required to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check.
