Job Summary
The EMS District Chief is an essential leadership position accountable for the oversight and direction of all on duty (18-30) EMS field staff. Works with and engages York County based public safety personnel (18 Fire departments, 7 Police departments & 3 Rescue Squads, 911 and EMA) involved in the support or delivery of emergency medical care. EMS District Chiefs work a rotating 12-hour schedule as part of the daily EMS System deployment. It is the expectation that the EMS District Chief will exemplify the highest professional standards and continuously foster an enriching, supportive and dynamic team environment. The EMS District Chief directs field operations and coordinates emergency medical personnel and resources to assure provision of high performance emergency medical services throughout York County. The EMS District Chief administers basic and advanced life support procedures to patients at the accident or illness scene, and if needed, may provide additional clinical assistance to EMS crews during the transport of high acuity patients. The EMS District Chief may be required to work shifts as the Lead Paramedic on an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance to assist with system staffing. The EMS District Chief may coordinate the actions of EMS staff at a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI), in conjunction with Unified Command. Additionally the EMS District Chief maintains daily time keeping, assists with scheduling, electronic patient care reporting (ePCR), monitors and maintains resource allocation, performs performance evaluations, employee recognition and accountability, internal /external conflict resolution, and administrative, technical and supervisory duties.
Responsibilities
- Emergency Service Delivery - This duty involves supervising emergency operations, conducting pre-incident planning, and deploying assigned resources in accordance with the department and York County emergency plan and according to the following job performance requirements
- Logistics - This duty involves ensuring fleet resources are fully operational and that adequate maintenance needs ensure fleet reliability. Ensures all medical supplies both durable and disposable are sufficiently stocked and able to sustain the operation.
- Administration - This duty involves performing routine administrative duties in connection with the operation of an EMS shift and the ability to manage shift level administrative work including documentation associated with shift operations and budgetary funding of shift functions
- Community Relations - This duty involves dealing with inquiries of the community and projecting the culture of the department to the public and delivering safety, injury, and illness prevention education programs, according to the following job performance requirements
- Quality Management - This duty involves the ability to understand and apply the principles of prospective, concurrent, and retrospective quality management.

Qualifications
- Required:
- Education:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent from four-year College or technical school or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Licensure/Certification:
- South Carolina Paramedic certification
- Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP) certification within one year of employment
- BCLS
- ACLS
- PALS or PEPP
- NIMS compliant with Incident Command/Incident Management in the following
- 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800-300, 400 required within 12 months of hiring if not previously completed
- Valid South Carolina or North Carolina Driver’s License
- Education:
- Preferred:
- Experience: At least Five years full time experience as a 911 EMS provider with at least 2 years of experience with Piedmont Emergency Medical Services as a Paramedic/FTO preferred.
- Licensure/Certification:
- TEEX All Hazards Incident Management preferred
- Successful completion of the NAEMT EMS Safety Course preferred
