The Neonatal Milk Lab Technician is responsible for providing nutritional services through preparing and distributing human milk, formula feedings, and maintaining Milk Lab records. This position is also responsible for performing inventory control, conducting compliance audits, and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice. The Neonatal Milk Lab Technician works as part of an interdisciplinary patient care team and works under the direct supervision of the Clinical Nutrition Supervisor and the AFCH Clinical Nutritionists. The Neonatal Milk Lab Technician will assist with training of new Milk Lab staff or other disciplines as needed. The Neonatal Milk Lab Technician is a fully-trained technician position designed to utilize knowledge and competency while performing technical lab functions. The Neonatal Milk Lab Technician maintains productivity standards, demonstrates effective time management to prioritize tasks, uses department resources prudently, and participates in compliance and quality performance improvement efforts to ensure that milk preparation and distribution is safe and effective. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

General Functions
· Accurately prepare infant feedings using appropriate equipment and aseptic techniques.
· Follow standardized recipes and assist with calculations of new formulas under the direction of the registered dietitian.
· Verify questionable feeding orders with registered dietitians or other designated medical staff to ensure accuracy.
· Pick up and deliver all infant feedings according to schedule.
· Maintain sufficient inventory for Milk Lab, rotate supplies and notify appropriate personnel when products are short in supply.
· Distribute, receive, store, and prepare human milk feedings using two patient identifiers (name and account number).
· Follow policies and procedures outlined for the Milk Lab.
· Demonstrate excellent customer service and be adaptable to unanticipated requests.
· Miscellaneous duties will include checking expiration dates, performing audits, restocking unit nourishment rooms and outpatient sample closet, rotating stock, and training new employees.

· Demonstrate accountability for the proper use of patients’ protected health information imposed by regulatory requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
· Assists in achieving compliance with the Joint Commission, Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), or other accrediting agency standards to continuously improve the safety and quality of care to the public and to the organization’s performance improvement. Comply with federal requirements set forth under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Conditions of Participation (COP) in order to receive Medicare/Medicaid payment. Ensures state and local certifications for health, safety, and quality standards are met.
· Maintain productivity standards and practice effective time management and prioritizing of tasks.
· Appropriately use technology required for position.
· Use department resources prudently.
Performance Improvement.
· Supports and promotes the organization’s infection control, safety, risk management, and customer/guest relations programs.
Professional Development.
· Complete annual mandatory education, competency assessment, and TB testing within time frame.
· Develop and implement an individualized plan for professional growth and development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and staff development programs.
· Participate in departmental and interdisciplinary meetings, task forces, and projects.
Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Some college hours and/or satisfactorily completed a Nurse Assistant, EMT, Paramedic, Pharmacy Technician or other Medical Assisting course.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Previous Pharmacy Technician, Science Lab work experience, nutrition experience and ability to mathematically compute and convert measurements with recipes.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Nurse Assistant, EMT, Paramedic, Pharmacy Technician or Dietetic Certification.
