Job Summary
PRN Rotate
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant – Phlebotomist performs routine technical and clerical functions. The CLA performs venipuncture - capillary puncture, labels tubes and specimen containers, specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens; may perform CLIA waived laboratory tests. The lab assistant – phlebotomist completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period.
Responsibilities
General Functions:
- Performs venous and capillary phlebotomy
- Maintains specimen integrity and follows proper labeling protocols for specimens’ tubes/containers
- Processes blood and other body fluids for various analyses to be performed by either BHS or
reference laboratories.
- Tests specimens, under general supervision, for clinical studies in accordance with established BHS policies and procedures
- Reports lab results accurately and responsively, recognizing abnormal or unexpected results, errors and problems with patient tests.
- Inputs and retrieves data from the laboratory computer system.
- Performs basic clerical functions
- Assists in stocking and maintaining laboratory supply inventory
- Assists with training phlebotomists or laboratory students
- Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
- Maintains safe environment
- Addresses patient population-specific needs obtaining blood specimens for all age groups served.
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
- Uses, maintains and cleans laboratory equipment and uses protective equipment to protect from exposure to chemicals, radiation and infectious hazards.
- Is knowledgeable of emergency procedures.
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Completion of a Phlebotomy program
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Six months of hospital lab assistant - phlebotomy experience
