General Functions: With competency validation and direct RN supervision, may:
- Assists in providing nursing care to patients under general supervision.
- Assists in assessment of physical, psychological and social dimensions of patients.
- Assists in planning and implementing a formal plan of patient care.
- Assists in evaluating nursing care provided.
- Implements/documents clinical and technical aspects of care assignment in accordance with established policies and procedures and validated skills performance standards.
- Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet patients' needs.
- Signs documentation that reflects role of nurse extern
- Reinforces patient/family instruction as identified in care plan.
- Assists/performs non-invasive and non-sterile treatments and procedures with attention to accuracy as delineated in nurse extern skills list.
- Informs RN preceptor/designee team leader of patient changing conditions and other pertinent observations.
- Documents/graphs vital signs, intake and output.
- Exhibits compassionate care and service excellence and demonstrates Studer Principles and “must haves”
- Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
- Maintains safe environment
- Addresses patient population-specific needs
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities
- Explore the role of the registered nurse within the healthcare setting
- Perform all the functions with the Nurse Extern-PCT scope
- Collect data during the admission and discharge process
- Collect data used in the assessing and reassessing of patients
- Insert and remove peripheral IVs
- Perform peripheral and central line dressing changes
- Care for pre-post op patients
- Participate in the care and management of procedural sedation patients
- Insert and remove of straight and indwelling urinary catheters
- Provide tracheostomy care and suctioning
- Perform oral and nasal suctioning
- Perform sterile dressing changes
- Perform venipuncture and proper labeling of specimens
- Perform pre-cleaning and transport of surgical instruments
- Provide SBAR report to oncoming shift
- Implement prevention measures for hospital acquired pressure injury (HAPI) and/or Fall Risk
- Assist with post mortem care, protocol for Organ and Tissue Donation
- Contact Organ Recovery Agency with RN supervision.
- Review all laboratory and diagnostic test results
- Effectively communicate accurate patient information to providers and other interdisciplinary staff
- Reinforce patient teaching
Position Summary
Under the direction/supervision of RN, provides basic and intermediate nursing care for assigned group of patients based on competence.
General Nursing Units care for patients from age 15 years to maturity by clinically competent nursing staff.
Special Care Areas care for patients 15 years through adult with high-risk conditions by clinically competent nursing staff.
Maternal Child Units:Labor and Delivery care includes patients who have a pregnancy related condition by staff are clinically /competent in maternity care
Nursery care includes care for newborn until discharge status by clinically competent staff.
Pediatric clinically competent staff provides care to patients from neonate through age of eighteen
GI Lab Unit cares for toddlers, beginning age 24 months, through adult by clinically competent staff.
Chemical Dependent Unit and Psychiatric Unit cares for adult patients and family with holistic approach to emotional problems by clinically competent nursing staff.
Emergency Unit provides care to presenting patients of all ages by clinically competent staff in pediatric high-risk adult care
Surgical Services provides care to patients from neonate to geriatric
Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing and has completed one semester of clinicals in an RN program.

REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR):
- Must have active healthcare provider Basic Life Support on hire (ARC or AHA); however, must have AHA Healthcare Provider BLS within 60 days of hire.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention obtained within 60 days of hire or transfer to this position if working in the ED or Behavioral Health areas.
- Must complete NVCI training before working in the role of a constant observer.
