Job Summary
FULL-TIME ROTATE
The Pharmacy Technician of Automation is under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist (depending on state regulations), should provide assistance in dispensing functions, including purchasing, inventory control of all drug classes, sterile product preparation and associated equipment maintenance, and automated dispensing cabinet equipment and inventory maintenance. Also performs technical duties to maintain pharmaceutical dispensing functions to all neonate, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including inpatients and outpatients. Additionally, the individual should maintain an in-depth working knowledge of pharmacy automation systems and will be responsible for the management of pharmacy automation hardware and software. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned
Responsibilities
General Functions:
- Performs distribution duties
- Interprets medication labels to compound and prepare. Maintains accurate records of transactions
- Prepares outpatient prescriptions for pharmacist review
- Prepares unit dose tablets capsules and liquids, surgical drugs and other specialty drug trays
- Assists the pharmacist with the dispensing of controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records
Department/Business Unit Functions:
- Reports suspected adverse drug reactions and medication occurrences.
- Recommends improvement in pharmacy or facility processes that will decrease the potential for adverse outcomes.
- Performs inspections of nursing unit floor stock and pharmacy stock to insure security, potency of medications and removes expired medications from stock.
- Assists the pharmacists in the provision of pharmaceutical care.
- Maintains formulary and cost savings by minimizing non-formulary procurements and utilizing courier services unless indicated for immediate patient care.
- Assists with report generation and information retrieval.
- Interacts with nursing staff to facilitate pharmacy services.
- Maintains stock in automated dispensing units at adequate levels and performs inventory and ordering functions
- Receives, processes and restocks pharmacy inventory.
- Performs daily billing and charge functions as required, recognizing errors
- Schedules appropriate technician staffing level for the pharmacy workload to maintain the staffing targets
- Ensures that service issues, such as automated dispensing system stock outs, turnaround times, nursing unit and pharmacy area inspections are addressed in a timely manner.
- Ensures all equipment including printers, IV hoods, and automated dispensing equipment are functioning properly.
- Ensures that all required logs such as IV hood cleaning, refrigerator temperature, QA reports are completed
- Respond appropriately to requests for STAT orders, routine orders, department requests, and ADC stock out bulletins.
- Accurately stock automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) in a timely manner.
- Fill/refill emergency crash carts, boxes, and kits timely and accurately.
- Re-package and label oral medications/extemporaneous preparations and maintain appropriate records.
- Assure all medications are checked by a pharmacist prior to dispensing.
- Stock medications into pharmacy inventory, including sterile compounding areas.
- Maintain adequate medication stock levels and proper storage of medications.
- Deliver medications to patient care areas.
- Attend to medication requests and phone calls.
- Prepare complex IV admixtures (i.e., chemotherapy, biotherapy) accurately, consistent with IV policies and procedures (USP<797> and USP<800>).
- Comply with state and federal regulatory requirements, Joint Commission standards and Tenet and hospital policies and procedures.
- Assist in pharmacy performance improvement and quality assurance activities.
- Assist with automation maintenance and troubleshooting, including ADCs, packagers, barcode printers, and scanners.
- Lead specialty initiatives within the Pharmacy Department (i.e., Controlled Substance Diversion and Prevention, Patient Safety, Tech Check Tech, etc.).
- Assist in performing various duties as assigned.

Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of hospital pharmacy technician experience
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Possession of current Texas State Board of Pharmacy Registration
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, IV Admixture Certification, or Accredited training in sterile products preparation.
