Extern Program Coordinator FT Days Position Summary

The Extern Program Coordinator, in collaboration with Extern Program Manager is responsible for the overall Nurse Extern facilitation in support of the professional model of nursing practice at our Carondelet Campus'. The incumbent acts as a consultant for areas that hire nurse externs and meets with nursing leadership to ensure structure and supports are in place to successfully expand the programs. The incumbent is responsible for the assessment of orientation and training program needs, development, and execution of program objectives, and evaluation and ongoing improvement of a competency-based orientation for the nurse extern. The Program Coordinator will work with the Extern Program Manager to ensure consistency in program implementation and evaluation. As numbers of externs continue to expand, the Program Coordinator can also help with operational needs like cohort coordination as needed

Daily preceptor assignments for all Nurse Externs. Provide support and guidance to all employed nurse externs. Work to create efficient systems and workflow for the extern/ residency programs. Refines and maintains the Nurse Extern Program to meet educational support needs of the Nursing Department staff. Nurtures the Carondelet Nurse Extern Program philosophy, policy, and objectives for nurse externs to facilitate their smooth transition into professional nursing practice. Coordinates the entry of the graduate nurse extern into the program, including requisite assessment, preclinical and clinical orientation, and the competency verification process. Oversees implementation of the Nurse Extern Program curriculum, in collaboration with the Extern Program Manager with input from nursing leadership. Assists with coordinating classes, specialized courses, group sessions, and other activities that constitute the program curriculum, which are based on adult learning principles and the Tenet model. Selects varied teaching strategies, as appropriate, for classroom and clinical experience. Develops and implements innovative models of instruction to support clinical learning in as warranted, using an evidence-based approach to practice. Observes and evaluates resident practice in collaboration with preceptors and Directors, and recommends changes, as warranted, using an evidence-based approach to practice. Provides leadership to preceptors and other educators in evaluating clinical performance against practice standards and providing feedback on performance to the learner and nurse director. Interacts with staff in an ethical, consistent, fair, timely, appropriate, and decisive manner in accordance with hospital and nursing policies. Acts in a leadership role for the Nurse Extern Program, articulating program needs, and reporting program issues to the Program Manager. Functions as a liaison between disciplines and departments in assuring a smoothly coordinated residency program, including facilitating meetings, identifying, and responding to daily problems, and communicating and collaborating with many different members of the care team. Collaborates in the development and revision of policies and procedures pertinent to the program. Identifies factors that affect the extern/resident’s ability to learn and fulfill his/her job responsibilities, progression within the program, and retention and then communicates recommendations, as needed, to the preceptor and nurse director. Actively participates in committee appointments to affect positive change in patient care and the system. Regularly reviews Extern Program data and program outcomes to identify areas for improvement. Establishes and maintains tracking methods to ensure competencies, orientation, surveys, and other programs components are completed within identified timeframes. Develops and ensures consistent use of best practices related to the Extern Program. Attend and contribute to all appropriate meetings. Other duties as assigned.

THE EXTERN PROGRAM COORDINATOR FULL TIME DAYS CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE.

Education:

Required: Bachelor’s degree

Experience:

Required: 5 years of experience in nursing, with experience in leadership/education preferred.

Certifications:

Required: Current RN license and Basic Life Support (BLS)
