Job summary:

A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional that is qualified by professional credentialing and academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures.
The scope of practice of the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate ARDMS certification which is the standard of practice in ultrasound.

Responsibilities:

1. Performs all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician.
2. Prepares summary reports and contacts referring physicians when required, according to established
procedures.
3. Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided.
4. Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.
5. Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required.
6. Assumes responsibility for the safety and well-being of all patients in the sonographic area/department.
7. Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member.
8. Provides in-service education team on requirements of sonographic procedures as requested by other members
of the health care team.
9. Demonstrates effective communication and conflict resolutions techniques with patients, co-workers,
physicians and other health care team members.
10. Uses supplies appropriately to minimize waste and expense.
11. Maintains current registry certification, state licensure, and education requirements.
12. Contributes to positive team spirit and effective teamwork for department and hospital.
13. Maintains clean PACS and Meditech data base.
14. Patient communication and preparation including removal of garments or jewelry that may interfere with
procedure and explaining how the process works.
15. Positioning patients properly to obtain ultrasound scans.
16. Applying their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the process in order to help physician diagnose problems.
17. Must be able to closely follow physician instructions, prepare ultrasound equipment, position patients, and
obtain optimal images for diagnosis.
18. Must be able to communicate calmly, compassionately, and professionally with all different types of patients
including the elderly, ailing, and handicapped.
19. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Ability to recognize life threatening conditions and implement basic life sustaining actions
  • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty (ies) as appropriate
  • Ability to effectively operate sonographic equipment
  • Basic computer literacy and applications for data entry, record maintenance
    Working hours while on-call may be inconvenient or unpleasant; must be able to arrive at the hospital within 30 minutes of being paged while on call
  • Certification:
  • Must have one of the following registry by American Registry Diagnostic Medical
  • Sonographers (ARDMS) - ABD, OB/GYN or Vascular 
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certifications

Pay Range: $49.69 - $77.02 hourly **Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
