Position Summary
The Clinical Practice Specialist (CPS) serves as the expert for nursing practice in assigned department/unit/service line. The Clinical Nurse Leader is responsible for helping to create and promote a culture that promotes quality patient care and service excellence. Utilizes and teaches evidence-based practices to develop the clinical competence of bedside caregivers. This position will engage and motivate staff to achieve a culture of clinical excellence by coaching, teaching, encouraging, demonstrating and role-modeling expected behavior of staff.
The CPS will have a dotted line reporting structure to the Director of PBHN Clinical Education. In coordination with Nursing unit leadership and PBHN Clinical Educators, the CPS assesses and diagnoses specific practice needs of nurses in assigned areas, and provides the appropriate clinical intervention for their development. The CPS will partner with the appropriate PBHN Clinical Educator for appropriate education content related to practice gaps.
The CPS serves as a clinical resource to the new nurse and their preceptor as well as the experienced new hires nurses and Nurse Externs. The CPS facilitates patient care by staff’s bedside competencies. The CPS ensures continuity between clinical practice and standards of care, not limited to Infection Prevention, Patient Safety, Patient Experience, etc… This individual works collaboratively with all disciplines to strengthen and elevate quality of care at the bedside.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Models, re-enforces and monitors care standards and makes recommendations for changes creates implementation and evaluation plan.
- Collaborates with nursing staff in assessing patient, family age-specific nursing needs and develops plan of care for complex high-risk patients.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided.
- Help coordinate scheduling of patient care staff, review patient care assignments as needed for optimal patient care.
- Designs teaching programs for patients/families and provides assistance to nursing staff in program implementation.
- Develops interdisciplinary plans of care for complex and high-risk patients.
- In conjunction with members of the health care team, assesses staff knowledge and identifies competency-based education needs of staff and members.
- In coordination with PBHN Clinical Educators, implements education programs to ensure the quality of staff knowledge and skills. Introduces new techniques/innovation based on advanced practice trends.
- May serve as a preceptor to graduate healthcare students.
- Provides consultation to physicians, nurses and other health care providers in meeting care needs of individual or groups of patients.
- Establish physician relationships, including intensivist team, work collaboratively.
- Work collaboratively with quality on PI projects, collaborate with wound care, infection control manager, patient satisfaction navigator to support, initiate, maintain practices and initiatives to obtain zero cauti, clabis, c diff, MRSA, c diff, positive patient experience and employee engagement.
- Ability to offer coverage for director and manager during absences
- Ability to work as relief charge nurse within unit if needed to facilitate patient care
- Active leader in throughput meetings
- Participates in multidisciplinary rounding
- Work collaboratively with quality DCQI for PI
- Assist in optimization of resources to maximize productivity and minimize costs
Serves as Clinical Expert and Resource to Staff Members Through Leadership and Education
- Maintains and seeks opportunities to improve clinical competence through continued educational activities in clinical and management areas.
- May participate in the peer interview process.
- Provides input into the staff performance evaluations and counseling process, if needed.
- Provides input into the recruitment and termination for employees.
- Collaborates with Nurse Manager and, or Director to Identify staff practice and educational needs.
- Ensures patient confidentiality and protected according to all regulations and facility policies.
- Serves as a clinical resource on the Patient Care Unit.
- Facilitate education plans for new equipment, new services, within service line
- Participate in leadership meetings as they pertain to education needs of unit
- Maintain and demonstrate clinical competence
- Provide leadership in critical thinking, conflict management, problem solving
- Foster positive teamwork environment
- Collaborate with team to maintain unit environment to meet regulatory requirements
- Monitors and ensures compliance with TJC standards, hospital policies, procedures, federal and state regulations
- Assist in development and maintenance of unit based policies, procedures related to patient care plans, patient assessments, patient and family education and continuum of care
Serves as a liaison for patients/families, physicians and across facility departments to promote positive patient outcomes
- Promotes positive customer relations.
- Collaborates with physicians to ensure appropriate patient outcomes and maintain physician satisfaction.
- Ensures staff maintains a safe and comfortable therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards and JCAHO Patient Safety Standards.
- Promotes patient and family education within the unit.
- Performs rounding to visit patients and family members to assess customer satisfaction and nursing care as evidenced on rounding reports.
Facilitates Staff Education and Development
- Assists with the Staff Development process to enhance staff competency and safe patient care via one to one instruction or coordination of in-services via the Education Department.
- Assist with the development of Nurse Externs
- Closely monitors department preceptor activities as well as the new staff members’ progress in the department specific orientation.
- Meets with new staff members and collaboratively conducts the weekly precept evaluation tool with the preceptor.
- Communicates needs for additional orienting, education to Nurse Manager/Director for new and existing staff members.
- Educates staff members on new policies or amendments to policies and /procedures.
- Utilizes team huddles daily to communicate pertinent patient care information.
- Assists with the implementation of corrective and action and/or education when needed.
- Assist with the implementation of unit based competency evaluation and education of staff.
- Maintains unit-based competency according to unit policy.
- Fosters professional teamwork.
- Functions as a resources person
Assists in the responsibility for Department functions.
- Assists in the department quality improvement planning, monitoring and evaluating activities.
- Actively participates on facility performance improvement committees/groups.
- Attends appropriate committee meetings and communicates appropriate information to Director and department members.
- Assists with the development of department staff members by sharing knowledge, skills and expertise.
- Oversee preceptor program in conjunction with clinical manager.
- Responsible for survey readiness activities and maintenance of educational files.
- Other duties as assigned by Director.
Actively participate in activities which will improve individual and organizational performance
- Assists in the development of an individual staff development plan.
- Actively participates in department staff meetings.
- Assists Director and other staff members in problem-solving activities.
- Actively participates in department and organizational performance improvement activities.
- Collaborates and communicates with interdisciplinary team in development of evidence-based clinical initiatives, integrating current literature and benchmark information as a foundation for process improvement to optimize outcomes.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Minimum: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Required: BSN or enrolled in a BSN program
Preferred: Clinical Masters in Nursing in areas of specialization or Clinical Education
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum: Three years of experience in acute hospital-based nursing practice, in area of specialty.
Prefer: Previous CNS and/or Clinical Educator experience and/or Past Supervisory experience
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:
Current Florida Registered Nurse License;
Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS Certifications.
