Responsibilities:

Provides expertise in a specialized area of nursing through practice, consultation, education, professional leadership and research. The Clinical Education Specialist establishes goals and objectives in accordance with patient, family and staff needs as well as divisional and institutional objectives.

Provides supervision of nursing care at an advanced practice level to a specific group of patients.

Recognizes ethical dilemmas and assists nursing staff to intervene utilizing appropriate resources.

Serves as a clinical resource to staff, patients, families, and other health care providers regarding patient care issues and concerns in area of expertise; maintains availability for consultation.

Guides, directs, and counsels staff members regarding specialized patient care performance, problem-solving and decision making.

Acts upon referrals from units within the hospital and collaborates with physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team.

Collaborates with others to facilitate contributions for the continuity of patient care.

Initiates specialized referrals to health care providers and other resource agencies as necessary.

Serves as a resource person to the nursing community, profession and the public through presentations and educational programs.

Updates reference material on the unit for specialized groups of patients and encourages staff to utilize available resources.

Participates in specialized education programs to provide learning experiences, growth, and development of staff.

Teaches staff on a formal and informal basis regarding specific issues of specialized patient care.

Evaluates the effectiveness of specialized educational activities in meeting learning needs and modifies plans accordingly.

Participates in in-services, meetings, conferences, and committees.

Initiates, supports and/or participates in research studies conducted by nurse researchers or other investigators.

Provides current literature, articles, professional journals and research reports regarding specialized area of expertise, to nursing staff to provide for on-going education and clinical skill development in a particular area of nursing care.

Participates in a journal club.

Participates in development and implementing planned changes and activities to improve nursing care.

Monitors performance improvement study results in area of specialization; collaborates with unit based representative and/or nurse manager to assure that standards are being met; assists in the development implementation and evaluation of corrective action plans as appropriate. Makes recommendations for change to the appropriate health care providers.

Makes decisions by considering the overall scope of each situation incorporating the global impact to Nursing and the hospital.

Promotes good public relations for the units and the hospital.

Assumes responsibility for special projects or specialized studies.

Discusses and develops professional goals for continued development with the Director of Nursing.

Demonstrates a professional commitment through membership on nursing committees, institutional activities and professional organizations; develops professional contacts.

Interpersonal Relationships:

Communicates effectively with patients, families, visitors, peers, physicians, and other employees.

Physical Requirements:

Qualifications

Education:

Required: Master's Degree in Nursing or related field.

Experience:

5 years clinical nursing experience with at least two in an area of specialization. Clinical expertise must be appropriate with all areas of specialty alignment. Demonstrates clinical expertise. Experience in the teaching and learning process.

Certifications:

Required: Registered Nurse Licensed to practice in Commonwealth of MA. BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, depending on specialty required. Certification in specialty required.

Physical Demands:

Physical Requirements
Lift/position up to 25 lbs. Push/pull up to 25 lbs of force. Frequent sitting. Moderate standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and bending. Manual dexterity, mobility, touch, auditory to perform all the related duties of the position. Adequate vocal pitch and volume. Sufficient perceptive acuity (vision and hearing) to perform all the related duties of the position
Working Conditions: Occasional pressure due to calls, classes and projects
