Job Summary:

The technologist is responsible for scheduling and performing pulmonary function testing (PFT). The technologist will assist in creating clinical protocols, clinical testing, operational policy, regulatory guidelines and EMR workflow.

Job Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the Pulmonary Function Technologist shall include but not be limited to the following:

  • Assesses patients and correlates clinical findings with exam requests with providers.
  • Assesses the patient’s ability to undergo the procedure.
  • Obtain pertinent data from the patient’s chart and document all data.
  • Educates patient for examination including, Spirometry, pre/post bronchodilator, Body Plethysmography, DLCO, Oximetry, Rest &/or Exercise, Methacholine Challenge Test and MIP/MEP testing. HAST testing, Shunt studies. Sit Supine spirometry, Exercies testing.
  • Maintains & calibrates PFT equipment.
  • Prepares Methacholine solutions for tests.
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Tracks supply levels, and ordering.
  • Accurately charges for services rendered.
  • Verifies and correct ALL PFT reports prior to forwarding to the ordering physician.
  • Serves as technical contact for point-of-care testing compliance.
  • Serve as a resource of comprehensive knowledge of routine and complex procedures and testing.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for testing.
  • Follow all infection control policies and procedures.

Education


Required: High school diploma or GED.

Experience:

Required: 1 year of clinical experience.

Certifications:

  • Must have a National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification with State of Mass license as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Special interest and study in Pulmonary Function Testing (RPFT) preferred.
  • Must have certification in BLS/CPR and have completed a formal program of study accredited by the CAHEA (Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation) or equal to completion of two to four years of college and a minimum of four years of clinical experience in a clinical environment.

Preferred: ARDMS or CCI.
