The Hemodialysis Technician is a member of the patient care services team with primary responsibilities for technical, multi-skilled direct and indirect patient care activities. The Hemodialysis Technician is assigned to work under the supervision of a registered nurse who delegates tasks based upon patient needs and Hemodialysis Technician skills and abilities. The Hemodialysis Technician will report all deviations from expected patient parameters to the registered nurse. 1. Collaborates and cooperates with care team members to ensure consistency and quality of care and promotes productive employee relations among staff members. Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and objective of continuous improvement, team work and the mission, vision and values of the DMC. 2. Provides hemodialysis therapy as directed by the registered nurse including initiation of dialysis utilizing identified access (cannulating a graft or fistula or utilizing a tunneled or non-tunneled catheter). Monitors patient status during hemodialysis treatments and responds to alarms. Documents activities, vital signs and machine settings throughout treatment. Discontinues dialysis treatment by removing fistula needles and applying pressure to puncture sites or notifying the registered nurse that a tunneled or non-tunneled catheter needs to be disconnected and flushed with ordered solution. 3. Sets up and monitors hemodialysis machines and reverse osmosis systems. Responds to alarms and makes adjustments as needed. Dismantles, cleans and disinfects machines. 4. Assists patient in activities of daily living by feeding, bathing, toileting and other personal hygiene regimes as required while the patient is in the hemodialysis unit. 5. Performs a variety of basic patient care activities under the direction of the registered nurse (obtains additional vital signs, ascertains patient concerns, etc). Reports changes in patient condition to the registered nurse. Assists nursing personnel in responding to emergency situations. 6. Follows all departmental policies, procedures and objectives; continuous improvement initiatives; safety environmental and infection control standards. 7. Demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy and expresses interest in patient progress. Answers questions from patients and their families and explains procedures and processes within the scope of their training/abilities. Maintains confidentiality. 8. Performs general clerical duties which may include, but are not limited to, answering telephones, registering patients, putting in transportation requests, paging physicians, etc. 9. Enhances personal growth through participation in workshops, educational programs, in-service meetings and reviewing current literature. Shares joint accountability (with the institution) for maintaining competencies. 10. Performs other tasks as assigned. [BRASSRING IMPORT 10/5/16]

Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or GED. 2. Current Hemodialysis Technician certification through a national certification program or will obtain certification within one year. National certifications include the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) examination offered by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission, the Board of Nephrology Examiners for Nursing and Technology (BONENT), and the National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO) exam. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved these three national certification exams for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patient care technician certification. 3.
