Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions: 

The Laboratory Assistant must have an understanding of the procedures and principles utilized in the clinical laboratory and be able to: 

Follows policies and procedures involving patient identification, specimen collection, labeling and preparation. 

Maintains laboratory equipment

  • Has working knowledge of principles and functions of instruments 
  • Is able to trouble shoot instruments 
  • Initiates calls for technical assistance or service as needed

Quality and Process Improvement

  • Produces quality work in a timely manner with minimal redraws due to improper collection. 
  • Use of Aseptic blood collection techniques minimizing contamination. 
  • Rapid response time for stat collections and other emergent situation ie Codes. 
  • Reports critical values and document as needed 
  • Performs phlebotomy duties in a timely, accurate manner and professional manner. 
  • Recognizes problems and takes action

Teaches and Mentors 

  • New employees

Participates in proficiency testing

Lab Compliance

  • Abides by standards and procedures

Regulatory Agencies

  • Abides by local, state, and federal regulations of following institutions:
    • CAP, FDA, JACHO, HIPPA, OSHA, AABB, CMS, CLSI and other accrediting agencies

Safety

  • Works safely and efficiently 
  • Utilizes PPE and hand washing 
  • Follows the Laboratory Blood Borne Guidelines 
  • Follows hospital safety policies
  • Properly disposes of hazardous waste

Inventory

  • Uses supplies conservatively 
  • Maintains inventory control 
  • Assist in ordering and stocking supplies

Professional 

Complies with Tenets’ Standards of Conduct

  • Sensitive to other races, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or disability 
  • Observes hospital policies and rules governing conduct, outcome measures, patient care standards
  • Maintains professional appearance and wears ID badge
  • Communication and Improvement of process by the:
  • Uses shift to shift communication logs 
  • Participates in vertical and horizontal flow of information 
  • Follows Chain of command

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • High School education/ GED 
  • Technical or Vocational Training

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Phlebotomy Certificate or Medical Assistant Certificate 
  • Direct Patient Care – CPR Required.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluent English 
  • Ability to learn and integrate technical aspects of the laboratory as a whole 
  • Ability to make quick and accurate decisions under stress and emergency situations 
  • Ability to use computers (i.e. Microsoft Office, LIS systems) 
  • Proficient drawing Pediatric patients and Neonates. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively and efficiently. Ability to work in areas that are confined and/or crowded 
  • Ability to manage anger/fear/hostility violence of others. 
  • Ability to work alone

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 1 year phlebotomy experience with all age groups 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Description

Summary

Primary function is performing phlebotomy procedures on patients of all age groups using variety of different techniques. The Lab Assistant must be able demonstrate skill and knowledge in order to obtain the best possible samples for the testing as required for the care and treatment of the patients. This includes correct patient identification, sample collection, labeling and processing of all samples. The Lab Assistant must have the ability to interface with patient, family members, physicians and other professionals as related to their duties in a professional manner.

In addition this position is required to perform duties of front desk, reception staff, and central processing. These responsibilities include registration of outpatients into both the laboratory and hospital information systems, basic order entry into LIS. The Lab Assistant must be able to also process the specimens in order for the Medical Technologist to perform testing in an accurate and timely manner. Assist with the performance of Quality Assurance and Quality Control. Charge Laboratory Assistants will accept responsibility and accountability in the absence of the supervisor.
