Position Summary
The Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the
physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures. The OR ST must be able
to work under high pressure in a fast paced environment. You will apply good
interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to
achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and a positive work
environment. The position requires the ability to be conscientious, organized, and
orderly and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient.
Responsibilities
1. Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and
supplies. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies; ensures good
working order of instruments. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and
makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule
and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.
2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and
other sterile supplies during surgical procedure. Passes instruments and retracts
tissue.
3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions
throughout the procedure. Participates in counting sharps, instruments and
sponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. Disposes of
sharps and trash appropriately in designated areas.
4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards are accurate.
5. Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishing
supplies and cleaning operating rooms.
6. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical staff and
students, as assigned.
7. This position follows safety procedures in regard to medication labeling,
appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-out
procedure, radiation and laser safety, infection control, assembling and
disassembling instruments.
Minimum education: Surgical technologist certification program
Preferred Education:
Minimum experience: 1 year of experience in a surgical technologist role
Preferred experience: 1 year in Level 1 trauma OR setting
Required licenses/certifications: Surgical technologist certification and Basic life
support certification
Hours per week: 36 hours
On call requirement: Yes
