Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Laboratory Services, this person is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight in clinical area of specialty. Assigned area of specialty which can include Chemistry OR Hematology, Coag and Urinalysis. Oversees evaluation and maintenance of new and existing instrumentation/ procedures. Develops and monitors quality control programs related to a specific section. Maintains policies and procedures that meet State, JCAHO and other agency requirements. Oversees training and performance of section personnel. Performs all duties of section staff.

Position Accountabilities

The following are essential job accountabilities:

  1. Processes samples and performs clinical laboratory tests per physician’s request according to laboratory protocol and serve as a technical resource in area of clinical Specialty.
  2. Demonstrates ability and willingness to work in the non-technical areas of the laboratory. Answers telephones, updates patients and order tests.
  3. Performs phlebotomy on patients of all ages when required and assists in phlebotomy training when necessary. Utilizes age-specific knowledge when interacting with neonate, adolescent, geriatric, adult patient population and/or family members, i.e., communicates at appropriate level and appropriate way for the age, (i.e., verbal return for geriatric patients). Additionally, assures use of age specific knowledge to perform testing duties, ( i.e., utilizing heel stick for blood draw on neonate, etc.)
  4. Writes, maintains and enforces procedures relating to areas of Specialty.
  5. Demonstrates knowledge of Quality Control, calibration and standardization of instruments. Oversees quality control program in area of specialty. Ensure all preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and resolutions of technical problems relating to instrumentation and/or methodologies relating to areas of specialty are completed and documented.
  6. Ensures that all equipment, supplies, and reagents necessary for the operation of the areas of Specialty in the clinical laboratory are available and maintained to provide optimal laboratory operations.
  7. Supervises employees, non-technical and technical, in areas of specialty in the clinical laboratory. Identifies training needs and assures that each employee receives regular in-service and training. Designs and maintains tools used to document competency of Medical Technologists in area of Specialty.
  8. Directs activities of employees, non-technical and technical and fills in for the Director of Laboratory Services in his/her absence.
  9. Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory computer system regarding ordering, reporting and verifying results and downtime computer procedures
  10. Is familiar with laws and regulations that apply to the laboratory following established protocols for safety, hazardous materials, and other parts of the environmental safety program.
  11. Completes .edu’s and other required hospital education by the due date.
  12. Adheres to SRRMC Behavior Standards.
  13. Complies with San Ramon Regional Medical Center Policies/Procedures protecting patient information and the confidentiality of the information in accordance with the Federal and State regulations.
  14. Assists in other work areas within the department as necessary.
  15. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: Possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in laboratory technology or related science

Minimum Experience/Skills: Three (3) years experience in a clinical laboratory in area of specialty, blood bank experience required

Licenses/Certificates/Credentials: California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License OR California Clinical Laboratory Specialty License

Pay Range: $56.42 - $90.28 hourly **Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
