Responsibilities
Position Accountabilities:
- Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance consistently.
- Demonstrates ability to provide and adapt care to meet the individual needs of pediatric (e.g., thermoregulation, keeps parents with child as long as possible), adolescent, adult and geriatric (e.g., keeps noise level to a minimum, pads all pressure points and bony prominences) patients.
- Demonstrates knowledge of preoperative patient factors that impact the intraoperative phase
- Ensures preoperative preparation (e.g. history & physical, interval note and operative consent) of the patient is complete before patient is taken into operating room.
- Identifies physical symptoms/changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
- Positions patient safely padding and protecting bony prominences, skin, tissue and nerves.
- Directs and/or assists in maintenance, handling and operation of special equipment and instruments.
- Coordinates cleaning and preparing operating rooms before and between cases.
- Is able to open sterile supplies and set up for procedures.
- Prepares the patient’s skin and assists with draping for all procedures.
- Carries out surgical asepsis during all procedures
- Accurately records, handles and labels specimens; demonstrates care of specimens.
- Effectively communicates with the surgeon in accounting for all sponges, needles and instruments, if applicable, during and after the procedure and documents in the appropriate area. Adheres to Hospital policy utilizing sponge accounting system.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization and biological monitoring.
- Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medications according to hospital and unit policies and procedures.
- Coordinates patient care giving explanations and teaching to patient/family, as necessary
- Protects the patient’s dignity and right to privacy.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Demonstrates the ability to make independent and ethical nursing decisions in the care of Operating Room patients
- Responds appropriately to the patient in an emergency and physically distressful situation.
- Demonstrates the ability to respond within 30 minutes when on call.
- Communicates effectively and thoroughly the patient’s condition upon discharge from the Operating Room to the receiving unit registered nurse.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Accurately documents on patients : i.e. intra-operative notes, graft tracker
- Demonstrates ability to schedule emergent surgeries in surginet.
- Assumes responsibility for learning and clinical competence, maintaining license and certifications as required.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
- Completes .edu’s and other required hospital education by the due date.
- Adheres to SRRMC Behavior Standards.
- Complies with San Ramon Regional Medical Center Policies/Procedures protecting patient information and the confidentiality of the information in accordance with the Federal and State regulations.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: Graduate of accredited school of nursing
Minimum Experience/Skills: Two (2) years recent RN experience in surgery in an Acute Care setting OR completion of an approved perioperative training program (Periop 101/OR Residency Program) in the last year.
Licenses/Certificates/Credentials: Current California Registered Nurse License Current BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers (AHA certified) Certification in specialty preferred

Working Conditions

Position Summary
Provides direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations. Uses unique knowledge and skills to contribute to perioperative patient outcomes that are defined as observable or measurable physiological, psychosocial and psychological responses to perioperative nursing interventions. Communicates and collaborates with surgeon(s) and the anesthesiologist continuously regarding the patient’s condition. Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Obtains supplies for individual cases, ensures that operating room equipment is available and functioning, and that all appropriate needs of the patient and surgical team are met. When on-call must arrive to the Hospital within 30 minutes.
